SRAM Vs. Shimano
I was just wondering how they compare. I'm looking at a 2007 Schwinn Mesa GSD and it has a SRAM SX-4 Rear Derailleur on it and I was wondering what model it is comparable to in the Shimano line.

Still kicking.
Here we go again.

Shimano from top to bottom: (Deore) XTR, (Deore) XT, (Deore) LX, Deore, Alivio, Acera, Altus
Shimano also has the Saint and the Hone, but they are made for abusive riding, as in off of cliffs with very expensive bikes that need to be completely rebuilt after one serious ride. Shimano also has the Tourney, but I think they are spec'd on Walmart bikes.
SRAM from top to bottom: X0, X9, X7, SX5, SX4, 3.0 (why not SX3?).

both sets will probably be similar in that price range...you probably wont notice a significant difference either way. most problems are caused by an improperly adjusted product...not an inferior product.

X.0 ≈ XTR
X.9 ≈ XT
X.7 ≈ LX
SX-5 ≈ Deore
Above SRAM wins.
Below Shimano wins.
SX-4 ≈ Alivio
3.0 ≈ Acera
From X.0 to X.5, I would take the SRAM stuff over Shimano. The SX-4 and 3.0 stuff is not very good at this time.
SRAM is getting better about this. Their recently made a new X.0(ish) trigger for X.9 and moved the other triggers down a level. Now their completely crappy trigger is the SX-4.
Though, the presence of a SRAM derailleur makes for an easy upgrade as all you need do is buy an X-7 shifter (trigger or grip) which will get you the "set and forget" SRAM advantage.

Whether Shimano or SRAM, should I upgrade my cassette from 7 rings to 8...or maybe even 9? It seems 7-speed shifters are last year's news & harder to come by than the 8's or 9's. Also, is swapping out cassettes easy enough for a newbie like me, or should it be left to my LBS?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Still an opinion based on my experience and riding style. I have thought about going with X.0 twisters and RD...but I dunno if I can go back to twisters after using rapid fire 9 speed triggers. I'm also assuming that the X.0 RD won't accel in the durability dept. due to the carbon construction.
