It's just a sharp 180 deg turn. the trail, or road, switches back upon it's self. Switchbacks on hills and mountains reduce the grade of the trail or road. (but here are switchbacks on regular trail too.)

A switchback is often seen on a steep incline where a trail zigs back and forth on the side of a mountain, with an almost 180 degree turn on each end.

When you look at a trail from a distance, it looks like a bunch of Z's on the mountain side!

Like a nose wheelie while swinging your back tire around only to set it perfectly on the trail and let go of your brake to accelerate down!

Took me forever to work up the courage to do that! When it happens, there is almost no better feeling!
