this thread reflects the sad state of the mountain bike forum. Captain crash and maxbrokeway among others post all types of bad advice. I feel sorry for people coming here for actual information.. there is some entertainment value though.

I may not be a seasoned forum member on here but here's my 2 cents anyway - save your money, enjoy the bike you have and when you have enough to buy something better, then do it. Keep an eye out for sales, a lot of bike shops will be running deals on their 2007's right now to make room for the 2008's. And don't rule out Craigslist - I bought a 2001 Cannondale F500 on there about three years ago - only paid $300 for it - it's a great ride and it was an upgrade from a Cannondale M200se (which was new and cost me more than the used C'dale!). And don't forget about birthdays and Christmas - wouldn't it be nice if your folks put a nice new [fill in the blank] under the tree for you this year?
Have fun riding.

Still kicking.
Ok, time out. Need to address a few things:
1: I'm not about to ban anyone who disagrees with me. To do that is just pure stupid. I need a real reason to ban. If anyone wants to discuss this more, feel free to pm me, I don't bite.
2: I want to know why exactly everyone is so uptight at this moment. It's only an internet forum, it's nothing to get stressed over. If you are letting yourself get all worked up over something on here, you need to take a break from going online. There are much more important things to worry about.
3: Most people are trying to help the OP, while it is only suggestion, the decision is up to the OP on whether or not they follow the advice given. What anyone says here is not the best course of action for every single person.
Time in.
So for some good advice:
Start saving up money and look around for used bikes(It's possible to get a really good bike this way.) or an entry level hardtail. Most bikes in the entry level have similar parts specs, so see if you can test ride certain models and go with the one that is within your budget that feels the best to you.

I think Wal-Mart is missing the boat. The should start carrying XTR and Dura-Ace components for those that want to upgrade. Wal-Mart could be the best discount retailer of high end components in the World.
My advise is, if it works then don't try to fix it. If it's broke, then don't spend more on it than it's worth. If you make lot's of money, then do whatever you want.

Well, at least you can use these tires on a new bike.
I also swapped the stock Altus rear derailleur for a 2006 Deore M510, which shifts a lot more crisply than the Altus. Recently, I managed to bend the seatpost coming off a bad landing (nothing else damaged though), so that's going to be replaced with a new alloy one as well.
At this point, my question is whether it's worth further upgrading this bike.
This may please you but ultimately you'll spend far more money by upgrading a Schwinn bike. You sound like your serious and you know some of the lingo. You can use this while shopping for a new bike.

I think you ought to convert it into a rigid singlespeed 29er.

How did I get into this? Not much to read on my end.....unless you think me and Gastro setting up a camping/ride weekend is good reading.

Hmmm, upgrades to a Mal-Wart Schwinn eh?
Here's one:
Deposit it here
where these two "mechanics" will give it a full overhaul and upgrade.
Failing that they will go ahead and dispose of it near Gastro's place*
* just pulling your leg Gastro
I'm sure they'll find one in a nice empty parking lot instead.
Seriously kid, save your money. Ride that thing until it breaks (and it will) and get a bike from an actual bike shop instead of a X-marts Sports store.
