Black Bottle Cages Suck

Look at this bottle .. it was riding in a black alloy cage for 18 miles.. Are there any that don't leave this stuff on the bottles?? I have 3 of the black cages and they all put this crap on the botle and then on your hands during a ride when you take a drink.. I guess I'm going back to plastic cages or possibly a silver metal one. My other plastic one broke after many miles and I replaced it with a metal one.

I got a plastic composite bat cage thing made by Trek when I decided to drop $20 on a black Sigg water bottle, figured the old metal cage I had wouldn't be too friendly to the metal bottle.

Every metal cage I've had has done that (various colors). I guess I just don't care how my bottles look. I've found that they still hold water just fine.

I just use Propel 23.7 ounce bottles. They're a buck a piece at the market and even come filled. The plastic doesn't make my water taste nasty either. It gets too ugly. I toss it.

yeah I don't care how the bottles look either, I do care about how I look and after drinking from the bottle on mile 10 or so you get black dust all over your hand and whatever you touch with said hand..

I'm going to try another one of these profile design stryke cages. The last one the top lip part broke, but it lasted 2 seasons.

They were only a buck more than the metal cages at the LBS.

I'm going to try one of those plastic cages next time I replace my metal ones (which do eventually end up breaking). I find that just about every part of both my road and mountain bike get covered with fine black dust and no matter what I do (even when I bring the camel back instead of bottles) I end up with black dust on my hands and where ever I touch. Perhaps it's just my local riding conditions or my bikes, but at least in my case I don't find my water bottles actually contribute to the mess very much.

I use a black bottle cage with a clear, transparent bottle but this has never ever happened to me in the 800km I have ridden since purchasing that cage. I've never encountered it.

If your cages are aluminum, that'll happen.

Try Stainless or Titanium cages if you're so worried about the marks.

um... I really hope that it isn't "metal dust".

It is the cheap black paint that is on the metal cage that is coming off.

It it was metal dust, the cage would have to be made of some strange metal...

Stainless steel cages. Or, on a mountain bike, a Camelbak for chrissakes.

Just as silly as making a comment about water bottles into a personal attack.

I happen to prefer a bottle to carrying around a ridiculous bag of water on my back... these are opinions people, nothing worth getting your panties in a wad over.
