Scott High Octane / Ransom or something else for Freeride?

Hi,

I'm looking into a Scott freeride bike. Urban jumping and drops, single-tracks and mild downhills. Not weighing over 33-34lbs (the lighter the BETTER!). Pedal jack is not welcomed.

I'm looking into a used Ransom 40/30 or a High Octane FR. Both weigh around 33lbs.

Someone is selling a Scott High Octane with a 5th element and Manitou Sherman, Prodigy XC crank, Sram XO rear, Pro-Supra rims. For 1600$, worth it?

Can anyone please give me some input on this bike?

Also there is a Scott Ransom 40 for 1400$... How is the rear shock mechanism on the Ransom? Reliable? Looks like a mess at the back.

Any other good bike options for my needs?

Please give your input and advise!
Thanks!

Both bikes sound like good deals. The Scott frames themselves can run around 1500.

And I see what you mean with the Ransom. The suspension does look kinda weird. I'm not really sure if it's reliable or not because I've never really rode one. But If I were you I would go for the High Octane.

You could also try looking for a use Specialized Big Hit or Demo, or maybe you could find a Chumba on eBay too.

Scott's rear is their own proprietary design and reviews have been favourable. Looks complicated as hell and might pose problems in the long run.
I've been riding my SC Nomad for just over a year now and love. About 32lbs with XTR, I9 rims.

The High Octane is a very sturdy bike and can take some serious abuse. It also has an adjustable head angle which is nice if you know how to set the bike up properly. It also takes a bit of getting used to and can feel a bit squirrely in the air.

As for the Ranson, never rode one so I can not comment. Well, I could but I would just be blowin' smoke out me arse.

Hope you don't mind but I have a few other bikes I'm looking to get some input on.
Intense Uzzi SLX with Monster-T and 5th element, 2004 model. 1800$
Specialized Trail SX with a Fox 36 fork, 2007 model. 1400$
Kona Coiler Dee-Lux year 2005, Marzocchi 66 fork.
Santa Cruz VP Free, with an Marzocchi 888, 2006 model.

I never rode these frames and won't have a chance to.
And by the way I'm 5'11' and 155lbs, if it matters.

The Ransom's rear end is, like was already mentioned, proprietary. I have heard that the bike is awesome, but there has been some worry about air pressure in the rear. For a 170 pound rider, over 350 psi has to be present in BOTH chambers of the shock to get good performance.
But... aside from that, I have heard the bike flies and is overall awesome.

Thanks for the information, I decided to purchase a used Intense Uzzi SLX, here it is:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEDW:IT&ih=018

Can you guys please help me choose between the wheelsets he is offering and the cranks?

Thanks.

You were worried about the SXT's weight and you buy a bike with a Monster T? That doesn't make a lick of sense to me, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway.

Yeah, I know what you think

But this was a good deal (don't you agree?) and I might be able to sell the monster-T and buy something lighter if it will be unbearable. And I think even with the monster-T it weighs less then your Trail SX gastro

How about the wheels? Which ones to tell him I want?

Obviously you need the toughest, most advanced wheelset available.

Which are? The SUN MTX Track or the SUN Double Track?

Generally, you think I made a good buy?

For the price I think you could have got something nicer/newer, and with better parts. And what happened to your lightweight requirement? I doubt this bike will be near your 33-34lb requirement.

And when someone says that a bike like this was only ridden on smooth trails...well, you know.

Bugger it all and put a Boxxer on a Litespeed Ghisallo. You may have problems getting a tire fatter than 1" in the back, but hey, you're going downhill... You don't need that much traction in the back.

This sucker weighs nigh on 18 kgs, which is 39.7lb for non-metric persons. not a good option if you want your bike sub 33lb.
