You referring to the spandex pic? It's over at that large, well known social network.

General noobie question

Hi all!

So I'm not really sure where to post my noob question so I thought the general mountain bike thread would be a good place to start :)

I did some riding 2 years ago for 2 years but now I'm looking to start again and perhaps take it more serious. When I was riding I was using a 1999 Giant Iguana SE and I still have it; that thing was a beast for me. The only problem that I ever had was that it wouldn't drop to the heaviest gear but took it to the bike shop and got it fixed. The frame never got bent or anything even though it went through a decent amout of trails. So here's my question... As you can tell, I'm attached to this bike and I would want to keep using it, so would it be a waste of money if I bought new components for it? Not just new brakes, this and that, like really modify it or would it be waste of components for such a frame and therefore use the money for a different bike? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks :)

Don't waste any money on upgrading the old bike. Keep it as a beater and buy a new one. You'll get a new modern bike with disc brakes, 9spd drivetrain, etc... and you'll be happier on the trails on a brand new bike.

Thanks souljah! I'll keep that in mind :)

Yeah man, you definitely can get a really nice entry level bike with pretty beefy stuff for a bit more then what you would pay to upgrade the LIZARD. The Hardrock Disk is only 499 at most LBS's.

DMINOR:

do you have these? http://cgi.ebay.com/Disc-Rotor-180mm...item3cafc97e02 if you don't you should.

^^ Too small. Yow! too 'spensive too. They are cool looking. Hope they got permission to reproduce Yeti's logo for a commercial purposes.

This is a custom 29er built by the LBS True Fabrications for the 24hr Red Bull DH event couple weekends ago.

Saw it at the Texas Custom Bike show last weekend. Still has New Mexico dirt on it.

You mean to say you aren't allowed to shave away some of the bridge and send it down a mountain?

Nope, it was a big ordeal with Fox a couple of years back.

craigcraigcraig 10-21-10 09:12 PM

ya, if only the market for this type of fork would grow just a bit more they would make one with more clearance.

craigcraigcraig 10-21-10 09:28 PM

i knew i would be biting my tongue after not looking at the 2011 line up before writing that.

electrik 10-22-10 07:21 PM

29r wheels for downhill? Geeze. Heavy suckers i bet.

mtnbiker66 10-26-10 08:54 PM

Dannihilator 10-26-10 09:08 PM

Rigid carbon 29er, add some road style calipers and really skinny tires and drop bars and that should make a really ballin'.....

Oh wait, wrong forum.

mtnbiker66 10-27-10 07:58 AM

I've been a shopping.......Looking for a bike to do long trails/gravel road rides. I have a bike for about everything else.

cryptid01 10-27-10 09:06 AM

You should come a shoppin in my garage.

GT Zaskar LE 18"
RS Mag21 SL Ti
XTR V brakes with levers
Litespeed ti seatpost
Syncros Revolution tubular cromo crankset
SPDs or CB Mallets
etc. etc.

Throw some I9's on that badboy and you're rollin. Fast.
