Knobbies
There's a lot wriiten out there about knobby tires not being able to go fast. I do not understand this.
my tires are 26 x 1.95 and really knobby. I find I am cruising just fine... I don't even want to try slicks, they're that fast.
I can't be the only one who has this opinion.

Fast is a relative term.
Others who have no comparative experience may well share your opinion.

Think about how the contact patch shapes as it contours the ground and what the knobbies would do right ahead of it. They slow you down. Much more noticeable on asphalt.
Reverse the situation. Where are you faster? Flat ground or gravel?

knobbies are faster on loose or rough terrain.. the fatter and softer the better. Skinny, hard, slicks are better on smooth surfaces like pavement.

Ride whatever you like, I ride knobs on my Prophet as I ride only a few miles to the dirt (the dirts the goal, so I take the hummm sound and extra rolling resistance to get there with the knobs on)
but on my hard tail I now use as a commuter I switched to semi slicks (slick down the middle with mild tread on the sides) and its night and day, honestly like going down a gear but without the spinning.
ride what you want but you should at least try a pair before forming an opinion, I was shocked at the difference they make.
