Was wondering if maybe a few people could take a look at this Trek 4500 that's on eBay and let me know what you think about it. Like what were these selling for new and about how much could I expect to pay for a used one like this. I think this would make me a good starter MTB...whatta you all think??

Yep, I agree with you. Would be an excellent starter MTB. In fact, it is good enough that you can even upgrade components on it for the next year or two as you get more into riding.
I was always very pleased with the series of three Trek HT MTBs I rode over the years. In fact, the 7000 was one of the best MTBs I have ever owned. Check out the auctions for them, as well. They have better components and you may find a year or two older one for the same money as the 4500.
Either way, the Trek HTs are great bikes for the money.

i think those were around $400 new, as my buddy bought one not too long ago. how much should you expect to pay? well, that depends on how much it's worth to you =]. while it's a great, solid bike, i did not enjoy it's geometry very much.

I have a 4500 and it's been a great bike. tough bike. I paid $350 for a new one in '01 so I would guess a new '03 might go for $400 or so.
