People wear baggy, earth colored clothes because they are 1) fat, 2) slow, and 3) can't see dirt from their numerous crashes on them.
If you are gonna wear a flashy kit in the woods you had better damn well be fast, and able to handle your bike. People can't handle that kind of pressure.... nobody wants to look like a fool.

Why is it that everyone has to dress up like a "Hiker" when they go mountain biking?
You know, the earth tone shirts and baggy cargo shorts.
Sure I know they are made of modern fabrics such as cotton with moisture retaining properties.
And yes the earth tones and khakis colors do make you less visible to wild animals and other riders.
But no one is being sponsored by L.L. Bean or North Face, so why are people wearing such understated outfits?
Or is it just people trying to self conscious and/or not get made fun of by their buddies?
Hmm...actually I think I just answered my question.

Fenders RULE.
Actually it has been rather dry, so the fenders are off the MTB and in the garage.

and gloves.
you do raise a good point 'bout the Earth tone colors making the the mud/dirt blend in with the clothes. yeah, that's nice. you ride through really muddy areas, or even really dusty areas, your nice bright clothes will look terrible; your tone clothes will look fine.
i don't have to wipe out to get dirty...
i find the spandexy stuff also offers little protection from brushing up against trees and whatnot (trails i ride are tight). Spandex = $$$, cotton = $. rip up your earth tone clothes and it's not so bad on your wallet.

I must agree that I look like a super hero in that stupid Road Nazi getup. All I need is red cape and I'll be all set. Hey, when I'm in the woods I do my share of flying (over the handlebars).
Another EXCELLENT fender-free MTB ride today. I am dabbing less and enjoying it more each time. Those into the stream with the slimy rocks and then up the steep bank with roots on the other side part still defies my technical skills, but I'm working on that. I ride the same couple of stretches of single track a couple of times each week, so I know what to expect and I'm starting to get over stuff that I couldn't ride before each time out.
I may become a MTB Weenie Deluxe yet.

I also second the recommendation to get gloves. You don't want to ruin your Road Nazi manicure.

This reminds me of the maple bar question
L.L. Bean: large online/mail-order retailer of "outdoorsy" clothing -- like the clothing section of REI but without the practical technical features of true outdoor wear. Eddie Bauer is much the same way - - citified 'outdoorsy'-look clothing that doesn't really cut it in the outdoors. Both are heavy on the home decor stuff too and have lost the outdoor gear sections that once helped define them.
