This past summer I purchased a set of Sun Rhyno lites with disk hubs. I use a disk brake on the front, but the frame is old and does not have disk mounts on the back. Currently I am running an STX cantilever brake in the rear, and the performance is less than desirable. I was thinking of upgrading to a linear pull brake (XT), but the bike shop I plan on buying the brake from told me that linear brakes would not work with the rims I have. I am assuming it is because they do not have the machined sidewall. The bike shop that sold me the wheelset said that cantilever brakes would work, it is just that the braking would not be as strong as if I had machined sidewalls.

Do any of you have opinions or experience with this?

Did the shop that sold me the wheels tell me what they needed to to sell the wheels?

Is the bike shop that I am buying the brake from just telling me they will not work as well, or that they just wont work?

Anyone have experience machining sidewalls?

Those rims WILL work with Vee brakes, they are confused.

Why would they specify a "brushed brake track" if it's not intended to be a braking surface.

Also, check out their disc specific rims. The rim profile is such that prohibits the use of a rim brake. The Rhino Lite rim profile DOES allow for a rim brake.

Yeah, It sounds obvious, but when you look at the sidewall of the rim it does not have the machined breaking surface or brushed brake track, as specified on the web site. I am pretty sure it is not a disk specific rim, as it does not have the angled profile, and it is definitely a Rhyno lite. It is not the black model, and it is a stock wheelset, not handbuilt. I am in the middle of communicating with the bike shops, but I wanted to get some input from people other than the shops.

They will work fine with V-Brakes. Get the XT M750 V-BRAKE and be happy you did. Rhyno Lites do not come in disc specific, they are made for V-brakes.

Thanks. The two of you confirmed what I thought. The XT is exactly what I was looking at. Actually the bike shop I am going to buy the parts from recommended it. The guy who runs the shop is really great. I think we just had a communication (e-mail) problem.

I have the Sun Ryno light rims on the off road tandem, and our touring tandem, both bikes are using XT brakes.

I have a set of those rims with v's. They do work, but not as well as the other v brake specific rims I've used. I've also noticed that it's a little harder to adjust the squeal out of them than it is the others, probably because of the super smooth finish on the rim walls.

Shove a 3M Scotch Brite pad (the green scrubbing your pots and pans thigy) between the brake pad and the rim and ride up and down the block. That'll clean the rim braking surface and remove any "glaze".

Trust me on this!

My kid told me something similar. I am running them on my BMX race bike (I REALLY hate to admit that I have one )

Anyway, he said if I sand the walls they would work better and not squeal. Maybe he's trying to tell the old man that I don't need anything to draw more attention to me out there heheh...
