Just noticing the year on it.

BTW, good on you for taking a mentally handicapped child on a ride. It probably really made his/her day.

In the mirey swamp 100 feet W.S.W. from this spring, according to *********? (can't read, indian name)
King Phillip fell. August 12,1670 O.S. (?don't know what O.S. means, but that is the date).
This stone placed by the R.I. (Rhode Island) historical Society December 1877.

King Phillip was the english name given to the Head of the Wampanoag indians (real name Metacomet)during the indian wars, of the 1600's. His death more or less ended the wars. The indian that shot him was, on the side of, or working with the colonists. We walked the 100 feet and there is a boulder next to a stream from the spring, that would be a good place to stand for a look around. That would make him an easy target.
This is only reached on foot or mtb. It's a good mile from a road, and there are no markers showing the way. The path is almost overgrown.
