Nothing wrong with a land-line over a cellphone. Sometimes your cellphone won't work - the land land almost always works. Also, to note if you use a land-line it is good to have an old unpowered phone handy for such emergencies.

Yeah landlines work nearly flawlessly, within about 50ft of the phone jack. I don't know about y'all, but that's not where most of my emergencies happen

Bikes: a heavy old steel Frankenbike Gitane, a cruiser (not something I'd buy for myself, but it was a gift, what can you do?), a Greg Lemond, a Specialized Stumpjumper(old, steel, fully rigid), and a Specialized Safire

I'm wimpy with that kind of risk too. I don't want to go tumbling down a cliff. Cuts and bruises I can live with; broken bones, permanent injuries, and death would be trickier, to say the least. There's one trail near here that I've ridden a couple of times where parts of it are like that. It actually starts off with some steep, loose, rocky sections right at the trail head; I was pretty nervous that the whole trail was going to be like that the first time I went. At some points it was more than 100 feet to the bottom, into a lake.
The amazing thing to me is how many people I've seen on that trail without helmets. I'm not a helmet nazi by any means, but still.
