Brian, speaking as a relative noob, dminor is one of the people around here whose advice I actually respect. It's funny...the people who grill those who give bad advice the most are generally the people who have gotten my respect around here. Not because they grill the noobs, but because when they do give real advice, their advice tends to be sound. Their advice reflects their riding experience, which becomes pretty obvious if you look around. Pardon me for seeking advice from someone I can tell knows more than me rather than someone whose experience is unproven, and may or may not know more than I do.

I wasn't being sarcastic - I don't think you're being difficult and judgmental. Opinions should be welcomed in the forum world - bad attitudes and negativity shouldn't be applauded - the latter two I haven't seen from you.

I'm not ripping on him as a good/bad source of advice and I'm sure he/she is probably a nice person, but you guys ripping on the noobs is just asinine. Take a moment to teach the noob or just leave them alone. You correctly decipher which advice you want to listen to and D is one of those. So why flame anyone who offers an opinion that doesn't seem well thought out? It seems the only reason to do such a thing is to boost the way others view you. I won't tear anyone's knowledge down even if I know they're wrong - I won't say that you're making 'dumb statements' even if you are. Instead, hopefully I'll try to explain my side and the logic therein and see if you can learn in the process.

This isn't namby pamby land, and this isn't TeachingBikeForums. I never understand why people assume that this a place to be taught rather than a place to learn. Dminor is generally one of the nicer people on here. How long have you been reading this forum? The only time I ever look at someone's post count is when they start posting that others are being mean and rude. Perhaps you would be better served to sit back and read for a little while before you go insulting someone who is helpful. Projecting your own insecurities on to another won't help you win any friends either.

I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but in order to learn, someone/something must teach...whew.

Zephyr11 11-29-10 01:05 PM

Honestly, someone who gives dumb advice most likely realizes that they don't know very much about the subject, but choose to give advice anyway. They probably don't have any real experience, and are either going off very limited experience or what they heard someone else say. So why even give advice?? To try to make themselves look smarter? I'm sure I could go into a downhill topic and dish out advice, but when I said something stupid (as I inevitably would, since I don't have adequate experience), I'd get flamed, as I SHOULD, for giving stupid advice and potentially leading an unsuspecting noob who doesn't know yet who has credibility to buy the wrong thing. When you know you don't have any experience on a topic, you have to learn to keep your mouth shut.

Plus, do you realize how boring this place would be if the forum regulars never ripped on anyone? ;)

That is not even close to being true. How about trial and error, or just observation?

Same exact bike except for wheel size. I realize this isn't actually possible but, which would you choose the 26 in or 29 er.

Trick question, you should go a size down with the 29er. Between a 26er or 29er that fit, I'd take the 29er.

^^ Yes I really posted it becasue it's another source in a real discussion. I do that occasionally, not to advertise 'That Other Forum' in any way, but to illustrate points or provide further, relevant information.

In that vein, someone there just posted a link to this most informative and thought-provoking article. I share it here because it is well-written, succinct and provides some solid food for thought. (Warning: may not display correctly in IE):

There's been some discussion of this in the Forum Suggestions and Assistance forum. What browser are you using? I use Firefox and I haven't run into any of the issues that others have. Are you using IE?

mtnbiker66 12-02-10 08:32 AM

I think it's due to all the senseless noob drivel on the forum. I think a lot of it comes from Ga.

mtnbiker66 12-02-10 08:42 AM

I switched from IE to Fire Fox and now it's working........what's up with that.
