Question about Brodie Fury

Hello!! I'm a total newbie to mtn biking, get my first good bike in one week. I'm buying a Brodie Fury from my local bike shop for $650 CDN, it's been used for the summer as one of their rental bikes. I thought this was a pretty good deal considering that it's twice that new, and I've been told it's a good bike. My question is this: It's yellow (mustard yellow) and the 2004 bike is silver. Anyone know if that means mine is a 2003 model? I don't care about the colour, just wondering if the components are the same as the one I was looking at online. Also, do I really need special mtn biking shoes? I'm very excited to get out, I'm on the coast of BC where there is some great riding. Yay!!!
