Why are they so thin compared to say a road bike? Do you guys replace them with thicker ones?

I don't have an mtb at the moment. It was something I noticed when I was in a Trek store this afternoon looking around; every bike there had thin cheap stamped metal chainrings. I was a bit taken back to be honest. Most of the ones were on bikes priced under $1000.

Alot of them are forged aluminum... or on cheaper cranks an alloy.
