Cheap Hardtail for begginer.
I am looking to buy a first time mountain bike that will be used mainly for trail riding and single track riding. I want a hardtail that can get the job done for a cheap price. I know this is a lot to ask, but there has to be somewhere that sales discounted bikes. Does anyone know of any? I am looking for under $400 and really really hoping for under $300. Does anyone have any experience with bikes that are this cheap that will work well on the trails? I am looking for a bike that preferably has disk breaks, pre-installed gears, a sleek look, and a good frame. I am 6'1" so I need a 20-22" frame.
Also, since I am a newbie to this (i.e. never gone mountain biking before) can you give me some tips on what to look for when picking a bike and what to do to get good at mountain biking.
Most importantly though, I am looking for specific examples of cheap bikes that work well. Thanks.

Bikesdirect.com has pretty good deals. I'd recommend staying in the slx or xt parts group range. It will shift better and take more abuse in the long run. It may be a little more than you were hoping, but worth it in the end. Good luck and have fun picking out your bike.

Here are two stickys that are found at the top of this forum. Read them up and you should have a better idea on what kind of rider you are and how to improve.
Hope these help.
