2001 sid sl - upgrade?

Question for you all - I have a 2001 SID SL on my bike. I've ridden it for the past three years or so. I've never had a real problem with it, but it was my first suspension fork so I don't know what I'm missing with newer forks.

As this thing is getting up there in age and I'm starting to think about mountain biking more seriously (and maybe starting some races), I'm wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a more modern/adjustable XC fork.

I hear suspension fork technology has come a long way. Can anyone give me an idea about how my ride quality would change if I swapped it out? (Lots of rooty/rocky trails around here, too).

Thanks!
