Hey there Formicaman!
You only need full suspension, once you've earned full suspension! You only need a suspended fork, once you've earned a hardtail with a suspended fork!
....Until then, you play with the HT rigid!
Skills improve with the rigid...

So far, I am able to do everything I want to do on my rigid. It's steel, which helps. I am still working up to hurling off 1 foot piles of rocks, but I'm doing fin climbing them. It's more of a confidence thing anyway, I'm still cautious after taking a really bad spill a while back on my old bike, which had front socks, but was a little too small for me. I'm not wild about the geometry of the new bikes - mine is a 23" early-90s Gary and it is designed much more like a road bike, e.g. a tall head tube, tall seat tube and not much seatpost showing. Slight riser bar, BMX pedals, 2.3 super knobby tires - it's a blast to ride. I need to find somebody who will lend me a full-suspension to try one day.
