The longest I have ever done was 6 feet. ;)
But when I was younger I had a friend that could do wheelies for MILES I watched him do one that lasted for over 2 miles. There is a guy at work that borrowed my bike during lunch and rode around the parking lot doing a wheelie that lasted for 12 min. Yes we timed him. :D

AllDownhill 03-05-05 08:07 AM

i still dont see how those bmx'ers riding those gt's or mongooses can wheely that long on a bmx bike i can pop a wheely but i cant hold it long enough for a cat walk

al-wagner 03-05-05 08:49 AM

The friend that did wheelies for miles did this in the late 60's and it was on a 20" single speed bike with the high rise handle bars and a banana seat. The other friend did it on a Trek 4500 mountain bike and he was a 3rd gear

I'm always doing wheelies. Put me in the 'over a mile' club.

redmonster 03-05-05 02:04 PM

This is from the 2002 Guinness Book of World Rceords

Between April 13 and June 25, 1999 Kurt Osbbrun[USA] traveled 2,839.6 miles[4,569 km] from Hollywood,California to Orlando,Florida.

redmonster 03-05-05 02:08 PM

oops
continue... He used a standard 20-in. BMX-style bicycle with a padded seat and 'fixed' wheel where the pedals pump backwards or forwards, like a uniccyle. Osburn made the journy in 50-mile stages around 10 Mph

that was under "The longest Bicycle Wheelie Journy"

Mines about 10 parking spaces

Crazyrcer 03-05-05 02:33 PM

Woohoo. I just did a 220 footer.

185? did you bring along a tape measure or something?!?!?!
I live on a 'farmett' (as my Dad calls it), so I just count the number of fence posts, the multiply it out. They are is 6 ft, apart.

Cool. That is a long way. I would think he would have gotten to tired to hold the wheel up after 5 hours.

Maelstrom 03-05-05 02:54 PM

I remember the bike...its was perfectly balanced for him, it wasn't THAT much work for him to do it.

Floyd Landis on the USPS (Discovery) team did a 1/2 mi wheelie uphill on his roadbike FWI... I guess it was on a ride early on with the USPS team, or during a try out, and the coach got really pissed at him for showboating.

Yeah, the first quarter mile is always the hardest.

I was at a Mount Snow WC race in the early nineties and saw Brian Lopes (who was racing XC for fun the day before the DH) ride through the feed zone, take a water bottle, get a drink, change sunglasses, and continue up the climb mid-pack...wheelieing the whole time with a big grin on his face.

a2psyklnut 03-07-05 01:12 PM

It's a matter of finding your balance point. Some bikes wheelie easier than others.

I can ride a decent distance, maybe a couple hundred yards. I can do turns and change direction. I can do one handers and my favorite is to do a no-footer wheelie. I can do it for about 5 feet.

Specializedride 03-13-05 01:56 AM

i cant pull a wheelie, but i have a friend who can do one for a very long time, like 1-2 miles.

atvsmurf 03-22-05 07:26 PM

1/4 mile on a 20" bmx'r back in the eighties.
nowadays maybe ten ft.
like the saying goes, the older i get....the better i was...

paintballdude 03-22-05 08:25 PM

I think I can wheelie for about 13 feet at my best. Give me some time and Iwill improve it.

Another MTBiker

Back when I was in high school, I built a bike just for wheelies.

Stingray frame, bannan seat, heavy duty (read heavy) BMX rear rim, smallest chinring i could get on the front (probably a 30) and the largest cog i could get on the back (probably an 18, but sure it was under 20)

Max speed on the thing was MATBE 5 MPH, but I could wheelie forever. Up hill, down hill, around corners.
I rode the two miles to school on one wheel, rode around the halls after school on one wheel (after the teachers had gone).

Can't say the longest, but it was as long as I wanted, once you learn the baance point, it's all easy. A little pedal, a little brake, a little lean, go anywhere you want.

madbiker555 03-22-05 09:01 PM

I can go around 12 feet on a good run, but that's because I don't practice it much.

bmph8ter 03-22-05 10:52 PM

About the width of 3-4 parking spaces has been my max. I really wish I could wheelie better. I am practicing though.

anthonaut 03-23-05 02:42 AM

Who cares how far you can wheelie. Its not like its a measure of how good a rider you are, its just some trick for impressing the ladies ;)

And no im not making an excuse for not being able to do them because i can.

CChaves 03-23-05 08:56 PM

not a wheelie, but i thought Steve Rominauk's front wheel manual was sick in the collective. any idea how long that was?

guess we'll have to throw out this one too...

WannaGetGood 08-05-06 12:47 AM

I think I have skidded on my face longer than I have done a wheelie.

Defiance 08-05-06 01:04 AM

I tried for a while to master wheelies but I didn't get very far before I dedicated more of my time to bunnyhopping. But, I've got that down "enough" (a foot, maybe a foot and a half tops but that's more then enough for what I need. As long as I can get the rear wheel up, two wheels is a bonus of learning that :P) so I might go back to trying wheelies.

I'll report back if I make any progress :D
