How many here are riding vintage steel and/or rigid MTBs?

I delegated my 1993 Diamond Back Ascent EX to road-only after getting my new mountain bike.

Rode this around with a Fox F80, but then I went single speed. Then a rigid fork lightened the bike some more, and I put flat bars back on. Raleigh MTi 1000 weighing in at 20 lbs with a 2.35 tire up front and a 2.2 in the rear with tubes.

1986 Ross Mt. Hood x2
I found these at a local second hand shop this past summer. They had not been ridden a lot, but suffered from years of neglect. Originally, I was only going to get the grey bike for myself, but I went back and rescued the green one when I saw it was still sitting outside a couple months later. I figured for $10, at least I could get some good parts off of it. They only required grease in the bearings, new tires & tubes, and shift cables to get them going. I had everything that I needed in my spare parts stash.

So . . . I wonder why a bike company HQd in Queens, NY felt compelled to name a bike after a mountain way out in Oregon?

They also had a Mount Washington, I dunno if they meant the one in New Hampshire or the one in Oregon, though.

i think that had to do with the fact that a big leaf was wrapped around the bottom jockey wheel and crapped up shifting, then dumping the chain all the way to the small ring didnt help.
i stopped to put the chain back on and saw this huge oak leaf snarled around everything, gunked up my gloves in the process

I think that was just their marketing department trying to make the bikes sound more rugged and wilderness oriented. They also had a Mt. Whiney that was their top model. If they had stayed with local names, I don't think they would have the same appeal to the outdoorsy crowd: Flat Bush, Central Park, Yonkers, etc.

My son has an MB-2, 1986, in all black. He just told me he wants to take it back to college next semester, so I need to go over it to make it more weather and theft resistant.

lol: I think an old, rigid MTB is about as theft-resistant as they come.

He told me that it's not that your bike would be stolen, but that the current campus sport is to throw any unlocked bike or seat up into a nearby tree. So I intend to replace all the quick releases with nuts and bolts. The 30+ pounds will also help discourage tossing. It is already pretty beat up and ugly.

I prefer the older chromoly Steel frames for recreational bikes. But steel wheels? Forget them. Change them out for lighter alloy wheels.
I bought a old Trek aluminum hard tail at a garage sale for $45 the other day with a beautiful set of light alloy wheels on it that I'm going to swap out for the heavier wheels on a chromoly frame bike, then swap the aluminum handle bars as well. Not sure about the bottom bracket but probably swap that too if it is the same size or maybe just the chain rings. The Trek frame is too small for me and of a rather crappy design.

15 speed . Made in Canada . Steel wheels. Steel frame. Good, low cost, all round off road bike. Nice high and low gears. One piece crank.

I've been riding the heck out of a 1992 Trek 950 I picked up this summer. I didn't much to it besides swapping out the tires, saddle, and crank for stuff I had in my parts bin. The paint job was in super shape and the bike is just a great ride:

Putting my '89 Ricardo Bushbike (Australian handmade bike) back together at the moment, it was pretty rubbish when I got it so it's not a restoration, just being built up to ride.
And before
Has some neat things that will stay like the oval chain rings and the rear brake slung under the frame, should be a fun ride and something I won't see another of (two years only with oval chain ring)
Cheers
Steve

Winter bike is a '91 Spec. Hardrock (almost all original) and my go-to bike is also another Hardrock but from 1999/2000. Really like the fit of these bikes and the fun they give back and they are CHEAP & RELIABLE like me
