I'm sure this question is probably asked often, but I'm wondering how high people without clipless pedals can jump. I'm new to biking, and have regular platform pedals, and am only able to hop up about 6 inches or so. I can jump to my left (say I'm going up stairs or a curb), but have trouble to my right. Anyway, I just want to get an idea of what I should aim for.

Well, it is asked often, but usualy the other way around (how do people with clipless pedals learn to jump? the pedals do it all for them!)

the short answer is that you compress your tires with a sharp downward movement before pulling the bike up beneath you.

i used to ride with clipless pedals and I could bunny hop about a foot high. the n I switched to platforms a year or two ago and now i can get bunny hop onto a picnic table. Its all in the teqnique....but you can bunny hop higher with platform pedals.

Check out the static bunny hop video on this site. It pretty damn high using platform pedals.

Wow! There are some pretty cool videos in there. It shows me how bad of a rider I really am.

I know exactly how you feel.

I think the stock trials record is in the 45" range - done without clipless. So you should aim for about 48"!

Thanks for the input....I'll aim for 48", and maybe I'll get up to 12". Those videos are pretty sick....i have a long way to go.

I'm much better in clipless than flats, and I managed a 21" hop about 5 or 6 years ago...haven't tried recently though.

I saw Martyn Ashton (UK trails champion) attempting a 42" side bunny in Bluewater Park a couple of weekends ago in flat pedals, but he only got upto 38" when I was there....
