Avid hayes fan switching to Sram

Ok seriously. I just bought a set of juicy 5's. I love testing stuff to find better products. Been bitten in the ass a couple of times but overall it has paid off with proper research. These avid's were getting mixed reviews but I wanted to try them.

Short Term
Very short term. 3 Days and 1 trail ride. Overall these things smoke Hayes in every category. Modulation, weight, POWER (I am talking a 270pound riders pointed downhill going semi fast...STOPPING) It was unreal (and dangerous until I get used to the front brake)

Some of you know I have a small disability with my left hand that hinders my power in my left hand. I have never been able to lock a rear hayes brake at speed. I have no issues with my left hand on these.

Now some immediate concerns or just issues I am waiting on before doing a long term review.

1 - The hose is REALLY flexy. Typically with hayes this would mean expansion under heat and the potential to loose all the power. I will wait and see with these as my descents get longer.
2 - long extended descents are part of number 1. This is a real test. If it doesn't work on 30minutes steep descents, it won't be much better than my hayes (which loose tonnes of power and overheat over 4 or 5 consistent runs)

Those are two biggies for me. OVerall immediately they feel and act fantastic. If it continues my bikes with be all sram/avid (excluding truvativ)...For you big guys looking for tonnes of power cheap....look at the 5's..

Its less flimsy than the new hfx9's and on par with my 2002 hayes mags (the best year for hayes I might add)

Juicy 5s are now 99 bucks on jenson!! Have you tried Hope Mono Mini's? I love the M4s feel and is it much different from the monos? Hopefully insurance will be able to replace most of the money and I am planning on building a steelhead.

Oh another 'downfall' is it has an odd feeling. Hard to describe but it feel slow to rebound...It would take some minor adjusting (I ride with my fingers pulling the brake but no engaging the brake the whole time, this way I just flex and the brake engages (thanks Crashing sux best tip ever)) so it doesn't affect me, but it....odd...

Oh and alittle more on the flex. I can flex all hayes lever bodies pretty easily, these bodies don't flex at all.

Hope is like chris king, not enough value. I have tried hopesa nd they were good, but not good enough to drop that much coin....In the end I will always be a value shopper.

My friend at the LBS races semi-pro DH. He uses the M4s and thinks they are the best brakes.

I don't doubt that. People also think the fox forks (those new even more outrageously priced ones) are the best thing since the wheel. I didn't find them that much better than hayes or these avids and they definately aren't worth double to triple the cost of what I can get hayes or avids. If you go on ridemonkey (lot more racers than here) its a 50x50 tossup. Some love hope and some love hayes. Guess who likes hopes, the ones who pay EP or get them free...

When I win a million I will buy a chris king headset, chris king hubs, intense frame and hope m6's (why not right)...until then, I need the money to eat. Oh and can't forget that 2200$ cdn fox dh fork...

BTW if I listened to pros, 80% of the pros in town and on the shore ride shimano...I don't like shimano brakes either...pros know enough to brag about what they ride, not what they know, there has only been one honest pro that I know of and he now rides a different bike, roholff hub and probably has my dream freeride setup.

Just a quick numbers game...

800$ for a pair of m6's
700$ for a pair of m4's
500$ for M2's (very XC brakes)
500$ for mini's (VERY xc brake)
500$ for el caminos
350$ for hayes mags
350$ for hayes hfx9's
280$ for juicy 5's...

hmmmmm Those m4s or m6's had better be able to stop a ferrari. (all in canadian pricing, but you get the idea)
