I rode Idaho Spgs up Evans the other day.... and got turned back by weather a few miles from summit.... It was slightly embarrassing (but also inspiring), but as my friends and I were getting ready to leave from the parking lot a family with a dad and young kid on A TANDEM, mom, and a 12 year old were just departing for SAME route. OMG. We gave them high fives, wished them well.... And they got as far as we did, also being turned back by same storm... (We stopped at Echo Lake lodge - I love their pies and people there - before going on, which is why the timing is off in this story...)
A TANDEM???? Wow...
As long as you don't crash on down hill due to road damage or brain damage (HACE anyone?) the ride is all good...

I got turned back by lightning on High Grade Road today. I raced the storm all the way back to my house in Denver, about 35 miles, to get home just in time for the tornado sirens to start going off. What is with this weather?

Left Denver at 9am, to Morrison, Evergreen, and then up to Echo Lake. Around 10k ft, it started to hail and lightning, over the pass and stopped at the Mt. Evans Gift Shop on the other side to warm up with a cup of joe. Lots of bikers in there had the same idea. 30 min later, sunshine all the way into Idaho Springs, and then rain all the back to Golden. Sunshine the rest of the way back into Denver.
Pretty sure I hit every season on today's ride.

we left idaho springs at 9 am yesterday (sunday), had great weather to echo lake, then just past treeline the wind kicked up and by the switchbacks it was howling and starting to sleet. Saw a few bolts of lightning in the distance in the middle of the switchbacks and was really concerned that i was gonna have to bail. I was feeling really good and had made really good time and was on track for a PR, and didnt wanna abandon within a couple of miles.
the weather held, i summitted, but the wind and sleet at the summit were so cold i couldnt wait for the rest of my group so i suited up and headed down immediately. caught a little rain on the way down but was back at the lodge before the heavy rain started, and waited a half hour or so for the crew to regroup and missed the downpour and had a nice descent fro mthe lodge back to the springs.
wet roads above chicago creek, but dry below that.
