Whiteface Question re: Entry
A group of us are traveling to Lake Placid and our goal is to ride to AND up Whiteface.
I am told there is a tollbooth that charges $10 per cyclist that opens at 8:45AM.
Does anyone know if you go earlier than 8:45 is it free, or is it just not possible?

See the tips at the bottom. A bit vague, but it sounds like if you go before it opens and come down while it's still open you will have to pay the toll. My guess is that they check on the way out to catch cheapskates such as yourself.

I will investigate this. Would not expect them to try to nail people as they leave the route, but I suppose it's possible.
Anyone have some good intel??

They raised the prices for cyclists I see. It used to be $6 about 4 years ago. Now $10?

Yup. It's frankly annoying but that's the rule. The road surface is quite good, and the climb is epic by East coast standards, so it should not be a deal-breaker. My advice to those who want to ride up, if you can, is get to the gate by 8:30ish and avoid the toll.

To come all the way from Michigan to climb this, after gas, food, campsites/hotels, $10 isn't much at all. The exhilaration of the downhill back to Wilkinson is alone worth it. Remember, we have nothing like that here in SE Michigan.
