North Country of NY

Hello everyone,
I am moving to upstate NY. No I am not talking about westchester I am talking about the Northern Adirondacks (true Upstate). I have done a little searching but with limited success. Does anyone know of good clubs, group rides, LBS's up there? I am starting from scratch ALL over again.

Lake Placid is probably the busiest town in the more northerly sections of the 'Daks, so I'd start by calling High Peaks Cyclery - https://highpeakscyclery.com/index.cfm and ask them the same question.

Without knowing where in the Daks you are going to be, it's hard to advise further, except maybe also consider taking up Cross Country skiing for the months of Nov. to April, then possibly heading south for the mud season - April/May, and sometimes Oct. (Grin).

Or an investment in serious good winter clothing, studded tires for the mt. bike, etc...

Learn to love Eastern Mountain Sports for cold weather gear. Their store-brand items are superb.

I'll be in Potsdam, NY which is about an hour west of Lake Placid. I was thinking of winter cycling. As far as EMS goes I never really liked their stuff. I always thought it was overpriced for the quality. EMS= Expensive Mountain Shi...stuff

Holy smokes, Potsdam!?!? You must be going to school there (I went to Clarkson for a while) or something because no one ever goes there for anything else. ;-)

Being from Canada I'd think you would be sufficiently acclimatized to the cold. Man, I thought it was rough there during the winter and boring as hell for a young college student. It is not quite enough in the snow belt to get the lake effect snow so just ends up being freakin cold. Nothing to do but drink and smoke, er, nevermind. Way too cold for winter cycling as I recall for this US'er. Relly nice in the Spring, Summar and Fall though!

Best of luck with it, glad it is you and not me. Brrrrrrr.

Ha, I spent 4 years there as an undergrad however never really was into cycling as an undergrad. Decided to head back for work and to do grad work on the side.

And it isnt to bad. My freshman year I remember it not getting above -20F for 2 weeks. Also remember leaving CA once and it was 80F, Canton was -25. Let me tell you, the human body isnt made for a 105 degree weather drop in one day.
