A friend and I (both 50+) like to do long rides on school holidays. First one of the season is Columbus Day, Monday October 8. Looking for others to join us this time.

I propose a leaf-peeping ride from Scottsville to Letchworth State Park and back. The out-and-back is 32.2 miles each way, plus whatever riding we do in the park. See Google map.

This is an unsupported ride, so bring your spares, food and bevvies. Expected pace: 14-15 mph avg, maybe less depending on who joins us.

The best views in the park are in the South end which I'm sure you're aware of. So there will be some good hills involved. Most noteably the climb from the Wolf Creek area to the Great Bend overlook and then when heading back North you will have the Gibsonville hill. This won't be any ham & egger ride.

Edit to say: I believe the craft show is that weekend, bumper to bumper traffic in the park.

I'm interested, but got to know my work schedule and I'm a fair weather rider, I won't go if it's freezing and/or raining. I'm sure it would be more fun than the usual getting dragged to the craft show.

That traffic should be gone by Monday morning, I would think. As for the climbing, yeah, it sure ain't the canal path, but then again, it's not Everest either. And on the way back those climbs will be killer descents.

BTW, I'm proposing that we meet at Johnson Park in Scottsville at 8AM.

Edit: Aw crap! That craft show runs until Monday night. What are those people, nuts? Looks like it's near the Mt. Morris entrance at the north end of the park. We'll be using the Perry entrance on the west side, and probably heading south.

I'm not up for that much riding in the rain either. As long as the high is expected in the 50s or higher, though, I'm there, even if the start is in the 30s. If that's not your cuppa, fair enough.

Hndlebar from the RBC and BikeJournal lives and rides in the ride's area and has proposed the following route instead. I'm inclined to defer to local knowledge.

This route also enters the park further south in hopes of avoiding what I've heard is the complete madness of the craft show. This also shows the elevation profile.

The plan is still to meet at Johnson Park in Scottsville on Monday October 8 at 8am, weather permitting. That would be dry, forecast high in the 50s or above, and forecast winds less than 20.

I'm still interested, but my work schedule is likely to not help me out, although I did see you mention the TNUA ride in another thread............and that has also grabbed my attention.

The TNUA is my favorite group ride. I miss it all summer long.

What I like best about it is that the TNUA attracts dedicated cyclists--people who will brave the dark, the rain, the cold and the snow in order to get out and have fun on their bikes. (Note: I did not say "serious" cyclists. There's a difference.) That and the empowering feeling you get when you ride in a sea of blinkies.

I guess the another thing is the attitude of the ride. All bikes are welcome--MTBs, cruisers and roadies, dumpster-rescue POS and CF or Ti wonderbike. All riders are welcome too--it's the only ride where I've seen newbies and racerboys mix comfortably. It's about 75% social and 25% training and skills learning. And it's no-drop. It's all about the joy of cycling.

I really want to go to the TNUA, it's a little drive for me to get to the city, the weather is supposed to be good on tuesday. The more you post about it the more I'm getting over my fear of riding with a bunch of people I don't know. Keep an eye out for a green trek 3700 with street tires.
