5 Borough anyone?

You're right. I did mis-speak. It's not a checkpoint before Central Park.
It is a (necessary) controlled access point for the park and for cross traffic.
And it is a BIG bottle neck.
Get as close to the front as you can for the start.

We ride "officials" don't frown on people starting downline of the start area. It's a reality, and in its own way, alleviates congestion in the start area. We could forsee that if the 5BBT were to grow, you might have a few start "zones."
We'd only ask that people joining the ride enroute to stay out of the way while the front "package" --motorcycles, police cars and front riders-- passes. Since many of you have seen this front entourage go by, you probably agree that you'd not want to ride in it, or be overtaken by it.
In my territory of the 5BBT, we "host" a few hundred riders on the Madison Avenue Bridge who fall into the ride a few minutes afther the front package passes.
Checkpoints are at 63rd Street just prior to the left turn onto the ramp to the QB Bridge and at 92nd Street prior to the VZ Bridge entrance.
There is no checkpoint at 56th Street, but here begins the "funneling" to set up the entrance to Central Park. Since you go from +/- 5 lanes road width on 6th Avenue to 1.5 - 1.75 lanes wide on the CP roadway, you need to set this up early to avoid a major (OK, even more major) backup. In addition, at certain major intersections, e.g. 57th Street, we are required to stop the ride for a minute or so to allow cross traffic to pass.

Tons of them in that area.
Anyone ever take the PATH from NJ?
I'm thinking that may be a lot easier than driving to SI, at least on the way in.
On the way out it may be worse, since you'll have to take the ferry back to the city.

You map link wasn't working.
The DD I used last year was 321 Broadway, near Broadway and Thomas. Plan is to be at the front door about 10 to 7:00. Will leave my (cheap) bike as a placeholder on Church St. Worked last year. Plenty of people to watch it.

Where do you plan on actually starting?
#108
Depending on when I get there, I'm usually between Thomas and Duane (I'm riding down from around 122nd and Riverside)
After getting coffee and a donut, I'll go back to my bike. If there are other bf's we can gather around whoever is farthest up.
Will probably go with a couple of ostrich feathers on my helmet, along with the bf sticker from last year. Don't know the colors yet but will try to find blue and yellow.
Worst case is I oversleep, skip the start and join up in the park, but I'm not going to let that happen.

Bikes: Colnago CT-1 B-stay Campy Carbon Record, '05 Litespeed Siena Campy, Bridgestone X03 , Peugeot dream bike gets FIXED, Waterford Campy Record Colbalto, Motobecane Tandem in perfect condition, A Belgium made Bertin that was sent by an angel
I rode it the last 2 years on a fg and it's easy, even the bridges aren't bad. I was thinking of taking the roadie this year, but I'll probably have to ride w/ some slow friends so I may take the fixed so I can do leg over bar skids down the Verrazano bridge while they catch up. Whatcha thinking of getting?
I built the original Peugeot frame, fixed with a set of deep V's.
Have only had two rides and still trying to catch the damn pedal on the upstroke!

Bikes: schwinn ranger (women's) that i've upgraded the tire, seat, rack, attempting the grips (doesn't seem like it would be that hard right...)
i'm in it! first time. i'm nervous about riding in a straight line with a gazillion people around me.
is the end of the tour in staten island or back at battery park? my plan is to drive to staten island, park somewhere near the ferry/ft. wadsworth take the ferry to battery park so on the way back i can just head back to the bronx by car. but i want to go under some sort of banner that validates the completion...ya know?

The completion banner is at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. Everything after the festival is optional.
If you ride at about the same speed as most everyone else, don't make unexpected moves, and stay alert to road hazards and the riders around you, you'll be fine.

They even have people cheering you in (although they mostly tell you to slow down and walk your bike)
The food at the festival is overpriced and not very good. Load up with free food at the last rest stop in Brooklyn. If you need water, top off your bottle, because they charge for it at the festival.
Some of the tents and displays are interesting. Some of them have free stuff.
Best part is the sales tent with BNY gear.
This year I plan to skip the festival, do a quick toilet stop and head right out to the S.I. Ferry. I want to beat the crowd and be back in Manhattan early. Will probably head for Chinatown or East Village for a real lunch.

that's why i was planning on leaving my car where the ferry is, i was worried about taking it back with the crowd afterward. i would love to go back to manhattan to celebrate and eat! and then ride back home to the bronx. might be overkill for me.
off topic but...you know i've lived in nyc all my life and have never been in staten island! this is exciting.

Load up in Brooklyn.
There is one water station just before the ferry, but that's all.
Last year at the ferry line there was a group with pizzas. I guess they ordered ahead, them picked them up along the way and ate them while waiting in line.
btw - it they follow the route of most previous years, there is a "fake" rest stop on the pull-over on the Belt Parkway, just before the Verrazano. Several vendors set up there and sell drinks and food. (suppose it might be better than the festival food) If you continue another half mile you get to the real rest stop at Fort Hamilton/Cannonball Park

I'll be there, with wife in tow, almost literally. We will be on the tandem (fuji Absolute) and I will probably either wear my BF Jersey or more likely one of my seagull century ones. Although it might be hard to see under the blue thing you have to wear.
Also a dead giveaway is the massively embarrassing saddle my wife prefers on the tandem.
We are staying with a friend (also doing the ride with us) in Brooklyn sat night. Hoping to get out early and get to the front of the line.

From the BNY website section on "Rules and Security"
"Carry only what is necessary in panniers (saddle bags), handlebar bags, and/or bags that attach to the back of the seat. Backpacks are not recommended; if used, they must be very small. Bags are subject to search. Please cooperate if federal, state, or city officials ask to see the contents of your bags."
I've seen people with backpacks. Never seen anyone stopped for a search

Yeh. Saw that too. East coast seems to be in a pattern of good weather mid-week and lousy weather on the weekends.
Tested my cold weather rain gear on yesterday's ride so I'm ready.

I don't pay too much attention to long range forecasts, since they don't even get the current conditions right.
