Generally, how's the city of Portland, Maine for evening rides?

Okay, more general question: I just did some "sight seeing" using Google street view. So, the Casco Bay bridge has bike lanes, and what looks to be a very nicely maintained road surface. Other roads around Portland also look to be well maintained. So, how well does this work for cyclists?
