I like the folding ability more for the novelty than for the actual space savings, but being able to manage it around the subway or at work is a plus. Thank you for the recommendation, but I do not like road bikes and having to ride bent over. I bought my folder this week, a Dahon briza, its a bit bigger than most folders, but its one sweet comfy ride.

Even road it to Flushing Meadows Park today, but it was so windy, and muddy at some points around the lake.

i am glad you like your bike and hope you will enjoy it. But a road bike would of offered much less wind resistance. You can get road bikes with higher stem tubes that addresses the problem of bending over.

It is a shame that the path around the Lake is always flooded on the west side. The Parks Department should do something to fix the drainage. Wonder who we should contact?

Are road bike more prone to flats because of the thinner tires? I mean the streets of the city and the way to the park along 34th Ave,and the lake paths itself are so littered with pebbles, crumb, and glass bits, that I wouldn't chance consistently riding on the bike path with a road bike, though I saw a few people that didn't mind. I'm a small fellow, so I like the low step through of the briza frame, and plus, its very stylish. Happy riding.

Yeah the lake paths are always in bad shape, I have to walk it at some points, haha.

Also does anyone know how I access the Flushing Bay Promenade. I have a bike map that shows I could access a path at the end of 34 Ave, where it meets 114th Street, but where is it exactly. Do I turn left and heap up to Northern Blvd?

You can take the bike path that runs next to Northern to Shea road north.

Please be very careful in that you cross a highway access lane were cars are moving fast. I prefer to access the Park via Roosevelt Ave.

Flooding of the bike path in Flushing Meadow Park, next to Meadow Lake has been a problem for many years now.

It would be helpful if everyone fill out this form and complained about the drainage issue next to Meadow Lake

I think that is a really great choice for riding around Queens. I lived in Sunnyside for 12 years before moving to Japan a few years ago and it`s obvious from the posts onthis thread that there are so many interesting areas to explore! Who wants to blaze past them all on a road bike?

Here in Japan, where cycling is really a way of life, not just a sport, they call riding slowly and exploring different areas "pottering". What you have there is a great pottering bike. Chances are you will use it much more than you would a road bike.

I "potter" around pretty good on my road bike, but it's a lot easier to ride than my heavier mountain bike. No matter what you ride, ultimately you're the engine.

Agreed, and any bike is better than no bike. There isn`t a "wrong" bike to have. I like road bikes and I like flying down dirt roads in the countryside on a mountain bike, but horses for courses right? To many people living in the city, a decent quality folding bike makes more practical sense than a road bike or, especially, a mountain bike.

I will certainly fill out the form and everyone who rides at the lake and park should too. Now that I think about it, the path needs a paving too.

Thanks! and yeah, it is a great bike for just cruising. I have access to a lighter road bike and a really heavy mountain bike but once I had to ride a crowded 7 train back from the park when I got a flat and people really give you bad looks when you are stumbling around with a full size bike. I don't what that again, so a folder is definitely very suitable for a casual city bike.

Here is a pic:

Happy riding everyone

I usually never bike there anyways, way too crowded and the roads suck there.

I did a run from Kissena to Cunningham to Fort Trotten yesterday, roads were alright, some new pot holes, but no flooding.

I might try for the Flushing Bay Promenade this weekend in the endeavor to bike more of queens besides Corona Park and the lakes, then maybe Forrest Hills Park next week, maybe.

Did a great loop today down the Vanderbilt Motor Pkwy, up through Little Neck along the Cross-Island Pkwy bike path, then down through NE Queens, Kissena pond park, Flushing Meadow park, and back home towards Forest Park. Perfect weather, saw quite a few cyclists. Way out of shape compared to last fall, though...

How do you get from Flushing Meadow to Forest Park?

I got letter back from NYC saying that they plan to make major improvements to Meadow Lake, wish they would spend a little money on cleaning what is in place.

I also wish they would complete missing sections of the bike paths, like the section between the Northern Bridge and the Flushing Bay Promenade.

Took a ride on the Flushing Bay Promenade, very windy and still cold... but a smooth and quite ride, must have seen just 2 other cyclists.

Thanks for the map arbuckle, I will see if I can muster the courage to head to Forest Hills soon.

Road to OysterBay and back via the bike path and then Union Turnpike to Commonwealth and then the LIE service road to Weatley Hill Road. On the way back I cut through the World Fair grounds which was packed with people enjoying the day. I passed the Uniphere with the fountains on and it was quite nice to see.

Might be a good idea to stay away from Bayside.

https://bayside.patch.com/articles/we...=breaking_news

The Dept. of Health today issued a warning that West Nile Virus has been detected in Bay Terrace.

The affected area has been identified as within zip code 11360.

Tests of mosquitoes or dead birds in Brookville, Rosedale and Woodhaven also turned up positive.

"The Health Department is increasing its surveillance and larviciding treatment activities in the affected areas," said Sam Friedman of the DOH. He added that the virus has not been found in any humans this year.

The DOH urges residents to protect against mosquitoes by wearing bug repellents with DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535 or picaridin. They also encourage residents to check for holes in their window screens, and the seal.

They also stress the importance of eradicating pools of standing water, where mosquitoes can breed, and to report stagnant water with 311.

When you come out of Flushing Meadow head on Jewel Ave to Main Street, make a right on to Main Street and head to 72nd Avenue. There is a marked bike lane on 72 Ave.; It is a few blocks before Union and runs the same direction. It is a safer route. You can also pick up Motor Parkway which is a bike/pedestrian route that runs off 72 Ave and takes you through Alley Pond Park. It is a great bike lane. Once out of the park it is a short ride to the LIE. Avoiding Union is a much safer alternative.

On my commute home yesterday, I got off the Grand Central Pkwy @ Union Tpke & some long-haired cyclist on a red bike was on Union Tpke, @ rush hour... right where the Van Wyck off ramp merges. (street view)

No shoulder, buses, 45+ mph traffic merging on both sides of you, loooooong curved uphill, potholes. Just wow...

Great day for a ride

I just rode my Worksman down into southwest Queens. Made it to the Worksman factory on 100th street off Atlantic Ave. Big, creepy looking, old factory. Looks like a huge castle from some angles with vines growing all over it. Main office was closed on the weekends but the factory floor was humming along. Traffic was light thankfully and 111th street is wide and flat. A nice easy ride.
