Status of the Belt Parkway Path, Brooklyn

From what I could see when I drove past today;

- The Army Engineers, or somebody, seemingly has replenished the Plumb Beach sand and re-established the beach.

- In doing so, a huge amount of sand now covers a goodly section of whatever undamaged path existed near the Plum Beach parking lot, as well as the section of the path that was broken asphalt and that had fallen into the water, so that there appears to be a section for about 1/4 mile long, that is completely covered in sand to a depth of a couple of feet and that is subsequently unrideable. Certainly a longer section buried then what had existed.

- It's a good thing to see the beach back, but anybody have any info. on whether the City is planning on re-building the path anytime soon ?.

Not such good news.

Some cyclists ride the entrance lane to the parking lot but I've tried it and it's a terrifying ride.
Especially when you run up against motorists who like to intimidate cyclists.
I prefer to take Avenue U to Flatbush.

Intimidate, hell. That means riding on the actual parkway for a bit. That's totally illegal not to mention very dangerous.

I've seen lots of people ride on the on-ramp to the parkway from Knapp/Emmons (my mother lives on that corner in the apt, not the nursing home.) This was even when the path was whole. It isn't clear where the entrance is a block before, but it isn't THAT hard to figure out that you don't go on the road.

I rode this about a month ago, so conditions may have changed. Yes, there is a stretch of about 200 yards where there is so much sand on the path you need to walk or carry your bike. It's a pain, but it's not much worse than the steps of the Triborough Bridge. Riding on the Parkway to avoid it is nuts.

I wish I hand known about the sand and construction before I ran into it a couple of weeks ago. First, due to construction the path turns into a dirt and gravel track. Then I found myself on the sand dune, and had to carry my bike across it. I was a bit flummoxed, as I couldn't see how far the sand went, and I didn't know how else to get out of there. Somewhere back on the path I had run into another cyclist, and while I was carrying my bike, I saw him on the other side of the divider, on the Belt Parkway, riding the wrong way! Now that was nuts.

im on this path often, for bikes, its good from the 69th st pier to the verazanno bridge (keep an eye open for 2 pot holes heading east) from the bridge to ceasars bay, its a bit rough for road bikes in some spots, but not so bad.

Our bad. Because I pretty much never ride the section from Coney Island to west Brooklyn, out of sight out of mind.

I should that the section of the BP path I have been referring too is the section from Knapp Street eastward.

I rode the section today between Caesar's Bay and Owls Head for the first time since the NYC Century last year, and the part between Caesar's and the Verrazano isn't in great shape. Frpm the VZ to Owl's Head I flew, hitting 30mph on the flat with a slight tail wind.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I've been riding the Brigham St to Flatbush Ave (ie. past Plumb Beach) section almost every weekend for the last two months. The conditions have actually improved greatly. In May I had to push my bike through a good 100 yards of sand. Today this stretch was down to a good 50 feet.

Most of the section that didn't fall into the bay several years ago has been dug out of the sand.

I'll update if I notice any significant changes over the next few weeks.
