Western PA: Tunnel ride (from movie The Road) still exist?
Hi NEers,
Several years ago, there was an annual ride through an abandoned turnpike tunnel. The tunnel was used in the movie The Road. My recollection is that it was somewhere west of Pittsburg. Does this still happen? Gotta link?
Thanks,
Steve

The rideable portion of the abandoned stretch of PA Turnpike about 8.5 miles is between Breezewood and a little west of Hustontown. Don't know about an origanized ride, but you can ride it yourself. I rode it last September during a tour from Pittsburgh to Philly. Neat ride. Seach this subform. There is at least one thread addressing it. Maybe more.

I address it in post No. 6 of this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/northeast/...e-options.html
But there is at least one other thread devoted to the tunnels, plural. As noted, there are two tunnels. What I did not mention in the above is that the easterly tunnel has a pretty good crown towards the easterly. Travelling W to E, that means you literally cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel until you get closer to the easterly portal. Not the ride for you if you are afraid of the dark. A good light is highly recommended. I used a 120 lumen head lamp and a small bar mounted light that is more for being seen than it is for illuminating your way.

Thanks guys. I think it was back in 2009 that I was going to go on an organized ride through the tunnel put together by some folks here in the NE forum. The forum doesn't go back that far, and I forget where to search the archives. Either way, it doesn't sound like there's an organized ride any more. It was the crowned tunnel, because I remember them talking about not being able to see the other end. I have a couple of Philips SafeLites, so plenty of light and then some.
Thank again,
Steve
