I feel so inadequate.
Browsing through local Strava ride and i found this: Bike Ride Profile | Sunset highway end 2 end & back near Brooklyn | Times and Records | Strava
Brooklyn to Montauk and back in one day. 253 miles @ 15.5mph over 17 hours.
Damn... that's a serious ride.

Went on the Brickwell Sunday ride.
Again, they dragged my ass up a lot of climbs... 2300' over 40 miles and 1600c.
https://www.strava.com/activities/386277541
We had 2 active service men join the ride and they are sponsored by Wounded Warrior Project and started training for triathlons. Great guys, just not sure they expected that much climbing.
You should join us.

We've been doing the MPBC AA rides as usual. On Friday my mrs somehow wrenched her knee while "just walking along". It was extremely painful, but an examination by an orthopedist and some scans revealed no damage. Yesterday it felt "not normal but better" and she insisted on getting on the tandem for a 44 mile AA ride to Crab Meadow, which has become a favorite destination. She did just fine. 2 hours later we attempted to walk the dogs and had to turn around after 200 yards due to pain. Tomorrow maybe do a short 30 miler or so and then hit the beach.....we will see.

Worked last night (and Sat. night) 7pm-730am. Got home, changed, did 35 mile AA ride to Bayville on the tandem. I dislike humidity. Showered, changed, & we went to beach for the afternoon with several of the other riders and their families for the afternoon. Stayed awake the whole time. Wife's knee A-OK. Just ate dinner, will now walk the dogs and then lapse into coma. Over and out.

1. I limit my Trail riding to one session per week during high tick months and no trail running.
2. I shave my legs
3. I slather on a deet based bug repellent (which is another reason I limit my woods time to once a week)
4. I stay on the bike and try not to stop
5. I have a little hand held mirror in the truck for post ride checking
thats about it.

C Law,
Thanks for your advice. I pretty much give up on trail riding and stick to the road during the summer months. The MTB comes out of the cave once freezing temps return. Trail hiking, during the summer I use long pants treated with permethrin unless it's too hot to stand it.....
I've heard DEET based products are relatively ineffective against ticks although it seems to be working for you. I can say that in my experience picaridin based repellents like Natrapel have hands-down outperformed DEET with regard to mosquitos, plus it doesn't attack plastics/fabrics, doesn't smell (as) bad as DEET, and is supposed to be less hazardous to the user.

As far as DEET, it proves to be 85-90% effective according to the DOD in 30% formulas for 4 hours.
Everyone I know has there own ideas about what works but I have never read any studies that prove anything else works (eucalyptus, peppermint, etc..)
CDC and DOD recomend both Permethrin and Deet. Maybe I should dedicate one kit to MTB rides and treat it with Permethrin.
Although, most of the people I know who get tick bites don't even go in the woods so you never know.

Well, we seem to have veered off of "Good Ride Today?" into insect control but what the hell. We accidentally did one head-to-head "bug-off" between DEET and Natrapel last August, in Montana northeast of Yellowstone. The winter before was a heavy snow year, and the high tundra above treeline was wet & horrific with mosquitos, like northern Alaska. We never saw it that bad. Anyway I had Natrapel and the other 2 guys had DEET, I don't remember the percentage they had but it was the real thing, not the dilute stuff. The Natrapel was working MUCH better although the 8 hour claim was optimistic. By day 3 they had hogtied me and stolen my Natrapel (not really but we were all using it). We are all converts now.
We returned to the same area 3 weeks ago, and bugs were completely absent. We were well armed with Natrapel and never touched it.
Back to Long Island and bikes.

We did the usual MPBC AA thing yesterday & today for 42 & 46 miles......good lord I will be happy when this humidity is gone. I sweat like a pig in these conditions.
Just a reminder that the Tour of the Hamptons is a week from today. The start is at Southampton high school on Narrow Lane. The mrs and I will be slinging peanut butter at the Bridgehamton stop in the morning. If it's a good day we then do part of the 65 after we are relieved by the afternoon crew. Come on out, our PBJ sandwiches are second to none.

Sunday was an MTB ride again, 34 miles in hither woods again. 3.25 hours. just stopped raining when I started.
The tour of the hamptons goes right past my house. so does the ride to montauk and all the other cycling events out here.
These events always end up getting all the car drivers angry for a week or so since they usually roll in packs 2-3 even 4 wide through narrow country roads. What can you do.

2 hour double loop at manorville hills yesterday afternoon. I always try to hit an MTB track when I have the occasion to be 'up west'.
19.8 miles, 1:58 riding time, GPS said 1700 ft elevation gain. A lot of rolling terrain in there. Always going up and down for the most part, IMO they did a great job of routing the 1 way loop. A fun little track.

I noticed the early darkness yesterday, too. Ran some errands on the bike after work and got stuck without a headlight at 7:15pm!

Rode to Tobay and back. There was a strong 15mph headwind heading south, but heading back was a "breeze".
Anyway I stopped at Tobay for a snack and finally noticed the signage. Seriously... does it take 4 signs to get their point across.
I'm surprised they didn't have them in Spanish.

Oh, wow! Today I was there, too. Maybe we passed each other.
I was wearing a helmet with two flags (New York City and Philadelphia), and black Adidas shirt and shorts. I think I was on the path between about 1:00 and 3:00.
And those signs are extremely obnoxious.

I know the guys who ordered those signs personally. In fact, I even know the guys who planted them in the ground. They are all very anxious about the serious issues going on in the town right now and they are just following the orders of the town attorneys.

First ride since last Sunday... life got in the way.
45 miles @ 15.7mph with 2000' climbing.
It was windy and cool, but still a awesome day to be out.

Anyone else do the Tour of the Hamptons on the 20th? It was a nice day to ride ( I believe it has never rained on TOH day since the beginning in 1992). There seemed to be a good turnout. My wife & I were 2 of 7 volunteers at the Bridgehampton food stop (morning shift). We were relieved at around 1130am and then got on the bike & rode out to say hello to our counterparts further east at the Fresh Pond stop east of Amagansett. With a, let's call it a "modification of route" (I screwed up) in Sagaponack, that added up to 42 miles. We got no complaints regarding ride, drivers, markings, food etc. It was interesting to see the mix of riders, from the hardcore to the, ahhh, soft. And everybody was smiling.
