Yes, we left the library just around 8:50, saw a group roll right before us, I think it was the AA that I saw later. Didn’t see you guys at all. We had 2 guys follow us down Muttontown, but dropped them over the hills. Which is why I’m tired tonight.

We only got there around 850am, a little later than planned, because the BP parkway was closed. There was a larger AA group that you saw rolling out a little earlier. We have a smaller somewhat mellower "AA-lite" group of schismatics who often elect to go out separately and pay less attention to the Strava stats.

Couldn't ride, was babysitting for my granddaughter.

In a matter of 3 hours she became noticeably sick. Took her to the walkin and she has conjunctivitis, double ear infection and a low fever. After having my son email the clinic with permission for me to her treated along with a picture of his insurance card, drivers license and cred card info she was as good as new an hour later once the meds kicked in. By the time they got back you couldn't tell she was sick.

Lucky them and thank goodness for my wife who is one hell of a grandma. She knew what it was, while I would of waited for them to get back.

Wife & myself rode down to Jones Beach to check out the West End extension.....and it was barricaded!

Wind was absurd. At one point we were winching ourselves into it at 8mph. My wife said it reminded her of the day she was literally blown off her feet on the summit of Mt. Marcy. Once we turned east again we could coast, without pedaling, at 10mph indefinitely.

Beautiful interplay of blue sky, blue ocean and wintry looking clouds. I managed to compose the (one) pic I took incompetently enough so the boardwalk guardrail perfectly blotted out said blue ocean.

Somewhere in Bethpage
A bit cold and windy for the road, but a glorious morning in the woods. 20 miles of dirt with an unusually large group. I've been suffering massively from cabin fever caring for my ancient mutt & have not spent a night in a tent in over a year. I really enjoyed getting out into what passes for nature 'round here.

Rode yesterday with the SBRA leaving out of Veteran's memorial park in Calverton. Not too cold, but it got windier as the ride went on. We did 31 miles. I hope I can cajole my wife into riding this morning, really cold, but no wind.

I got exactly a mile in at BP on the mt. bike before bagging it due to a bum knee, which I injured at work a week ago. I can road ride OK, starting up is painful, but the stop/start and sudden accelerations required of mt. biking, really causes pain. So ice for a while.

I chatted with Jeff Caldwell for a bit, he was in early waiting for all of the Joe ride people.

Brisk and beautiful today also! We did 26 as my wife has had a bout of sciatica this week and wanted to take it easy.

Unfortunately between work, weather and dog, that 26 was my total for the whole week. Egad.

27 miles today around Bellport, Patchogue, and Blue Point. We hope to get a ride in tomorrow as my wife goes in for surgery next week which will effectively end her cycling until next year.

Ahh, nice area. We pass through that way every time we ride to Montauk. Sometimes I do a loop from Sayville to the east and back. Oddly enough, I enjoy that stretch as much if not more than the tony Hamptons.

Best of luck next week.

Yeah, South Country Road in Bellport is pretty nice. Wide shoulder. Today we went west first, so going east on the way home we had the wind at our backs. I'm a much quicker cyclist with a tailwind

Thanks for the well wishes.

Visiting my parents in Deer Park this weekend. If anyone has advice on where to ride that's mostly paved I'd appreciate it. I tried looking up the trails but it seems they're all short rides and not much was said about the terrain. Most I've ever done there was head straight North to the Sound and back. Thanks.

I wouldn't recommend any route this time of year on account of the fallen leaves situation, which can cause your bike to go out fr under you.

The LIE Service Rd. east goes 20 miles one-way. On a Sat. or Sunday morning it's a nice ride.

Or the trails at Edgewood Preserve, which in Deer Park, has 17+ miles of single track, some beginner-intermediate, some advanced.

Trail map is here:

https://climbonline.org/2014j/

You need a state DEC permit but can get that on-line and print it. One copy goes on the dashboard if you park, another you carry.

Fallen leaves are really only an issue if wet, than a bit of care in turns. Otherwise the riding can be great.

Thanks! I probably should have specified- strictly a narrow-tired road bike. Also, I grew up there so I know the area quite well I just wasn't riding much back then. I was not aware that the service road was rideable. That's good news.

Too nice not to go for a ride. Went down to Tobay and then headed north to Cold Spring Harbor.

When i turned on my Garmin 510, it hung so I had to force it to reboot. When it finally loaded, all my settings were gone. So I then spent 20 minutes recustomizing it. Luckily I had screen prints of all my screens and all my rides are uploaded to Strava. This is the 4th time its done that in the past 4 years and i'm getting tired of Garmin not working flawlessly. I might look into replacing it with a Wahoo.

When was the last time you dumped the ride history ?. Sometimes it's just full. But agree that Wahoo's are good units. I had a Bolt, worked perfect out of the box but ultimately didn't like their white lettering on black background navigation TBT page. Couldn't read it while wearing sunglasses. My Garmin 1000 is a better navigation unit (IMO), is easier to read, does TBT better and has better maps. If you don't need navigation, the Wahoo's are probably a better choice.

PS, this might be the time to buy a new unit, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, etc...

This reminds me of a story, I can't resist.

My Dad ALWAYS had a gimbal-mounted compass on the dash of his car. He was constantly trying to get me to install one.

The first time I got a GPS for the car, I couldn't wait to show him. Compass? PSHAW! We've got compass, a moving map, turn by turn directions!!!! I was to drive him to the VA Northport facility for his hearing aid checkup, and I was going to blow the Old Man's mind. So we set out, following the GPS. I thought it was picking an.....unusual route, but hey, let's see, maybe it knows shortcuts.

And it took us, I remember to this day, to 39 Coconut Drive in Commack, and announced with finality "You have arrived".

The Old Man turned to me, clearly unimpressed, and said, "I have a compass".

It sure was, great day for a late fall ride. We snuck out at 11am with another couple of tandem riders up into East Northport. Dog was asleep which was good.

Got home, woke him up, took him out & he did a nice pee pee. As I was carrying him in, he decided he had more in the tank, and proceeded to hose me down my whole right side.

Better to be pissed on than pissed off. It's all good.

Jones Beach Extension

Yesterday I rode to the new extension that goes west of the Boardwalk. It was a nice leisurely ride. The path also crosses over and goes to the Coast Guard Station. The one minor thing to look out for is as you make your first turn to go the the Coast Guard station the resident bird population decided that's where they were going to open all their shellfish. Shell fragments galore.
