Local club had a Christmas light bike ride in the cold and dark, so we went.

A bit nippy this morning, but not nippy enough to keep bigbossman, MarkoPolo and me from descending en masse on my friend Carl's house in Martinez. His wife had the good sense to tell us to hit the road and we did, even though it was chiily and foggy and damp and stuff like that.
We headed out Alhambra Valley and over the easier side of Pig Farm, noting once again how the "Pig Sale Today" sign no longer exists and wondering how long it will take for the "Pig Farm" reference to be lost to the mists of time. (We talk about really deep sh*t like this on our rides. ) The run down Alhambra Valley/Pinole Valley into Pinole was, shall we say, brisk, but we kinda-sorta warmed up on the ride through Hercules, Rodeo and the ever-scenic Cononco-Phillips oil refinery and tank farm.
As usual when in these parts, we stopped for lunch at the great deli in Crocket. (I can never remember its name- on the south side of the main street just a bit west of Crocket Blvd.) If you have never been there, you should stop in - good eats and a fun, funky atmosphere. Do stop in, but do not expect fast service.
After our repast, we had several options for returning home. We took the dumbest one; up McEwen. It's still very pretty. It's also still very steep for that first kilometer. Carl and MarkoPolo took the climbing honors, while bigbossman took the lagging behind dishonors, just as had been the case on Pig Farm. From there, the usual easy run down Franklin Canyon and over a roller or three back to Carl's house.
According to Carl and John's odometers, we went about 35 miles. Since neither MarkoPolo nor I had such devices, we are claiming it was 50 miles, easy. Hey, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

As for watching Raider games, there's an old saying that applies: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me; fool me every year since the 1983 Super Bowl, I'm a Raider fan."

Dan in hobbit land by ccorlew, on Flickr
When LanceOldStrong called to say he had Friday off and ask if I was up for a metric I said "you bet."
As always his routes are top shelf. Even if I know about where we're headed, he always manages to toss in a few interesting twists. This ride started in Concord, went through Danville, popped over to Castro Valley up Redwood road, through Canyon. The redwoods in Canyon are magnificent, and it always feels like a magical place. On a ride a while ago as we rode out of Canyon and into Moraga LanceOldStrong remarked "We're not in the Shire any more." Since then I always think of Canyon as "Hobbit Land."
Our 63 mile jaunt was foggy, cold, fun and generally uneventful until we got back to walnut Creek, where a motorized bicycle passed us on Olympic Blvd. LanceOldStrong, being LanceOldStrong couldn't stand it and had to chase him down, then blow him away. Though he then made a total Cat 6 move by turning right. Sure, it was really our route, but still...
Anyway, what a pleasant way to wrap up the year. It's almost time to compute year end mileages, and set next years goals!

Telemetry reports 32+ mph. That's after 51 miles with a decent amount of climbing. I'll bet that guy is now installing a bigger engine. No, not Oldstrong, the motorized guy.

+1, it's what I imagine it would be like to drop some acid and go ride Pinehurst Rd. Not that I've considered doing that, you understand

In El Dorado County, down part of Green Valley Road (from Cambridge to Sophia) and back again. Only about 17 miles total. And (according to ridewithgps) 1960 feet down and then 1960 up.
My maximum speed was 39.2 mph. I was pretty sure parts of my face would freeze and fall off at that point.
And (most importantly) I had the great pleasure of meeting freightraininguphill, who had come out for the local Beatty hill climbing challenge (at which I was volunteering)
AND she and a friend provided me good companionship while I crept back up Green Valley Road. I finally persuaded them to pass me on the last hill up to Cambridge and we spent a few moments hanging out at a coffee place before going our separate ways.

I dropped it into Photoshop to try and overcome the low resolution, and make it look like I imagined it instead of what it really looked like. Lot's of dodge/burn, and layer masking in some vibrancy and softness in various spots.
The camera in the iPhone works pretty well for bolgging if you give the files a little Photoshop love. I'm trying to explore using it more.

Don't mince words
We stuck around for NYE and the weekend, and did variations of Winters Loops for 34 fast team training miles Sat., 50 mostly-moderate miles on Sunday, and 43 social miles today. I haven't ridden 3 days in a row since before Thanksgiving, maybe not since the end of October, so this was a treat I hope to repeat.
After I wolfed down a sandwich c_gallagh reminded me that it's time to begin our 10 wk. training plan for the San Diego Half-Marathon, so I ran 3 torturous, painful, flat miles with him. I don't know how triathletes do it.

I got to thinking about Sunday's ride, and I had a bad feeling that I may have screwed up by riding along without saying anything first. I PMed a BF member who is also a member of The Hammerin' Wheels, and he confirmed my fears. Another lesson learned the hard way.
To anyone I may have offended by doing this, I am sorry.

Congrats! I managed a PR too, it was a damn hard effort and there's a big gap between me and any kind of podium-worthy time but it's all good.

Did hill repeats on Kings. For the first 40 minutes it was like a great Exodus from the hills with constant stream of cars coming down. All of them apparently not capable of driving more then 20mph.
