Here's the route, with all your favorite climbs.

It's the week before finals where I teach, so i don't think I can cut school, which is really a drag. I'd love to be there...

Basically, they are racing the toughest section of the Devil Mountain Double. This will be good.

Finish line on top of Sierra? I can't grasp the logistics of that... there's no room for anything up there.
Fun place to watch though. Maybe I'll ride up the back side this time.
That's me with the flag. And every fan should have a Bear Republic flag like Flandrians have rampant lion flags.

Racing! And they'll do it the day before, and the day after. I am in awe. I'd be feeling pretty good about myself if I just rode that route at any speed.

I will try to be along the route of this stage. Do not know where yet but probably not on Sierra as it will be majorly crowded.
May be on Patterson or Mines Road where it climbs and the scenery is nice.

Hummmmm. I just talked to my department chair and told him I was feeling a bit off and might not be able to work on.....Wednesday, May 18. Health reasons, you know...He seemed understanding. So, we'll see.

Is there a GIANT laughing icon to use? If I get the day off I'll be calling in favors and paying dearly for long while. Grad students? What are those?

Assuming I'm in town (which is not guaranteed), I plan to go with my friend Carl (whom I've known since 1st grade and who got me into the cycling thing back in high school) to see the start in Livermore (the town of my birth, BTW) and then high-tail it to SJ via car and then ride up Sierra until we get to the finish line, barf up a lung, or get forced to the side3 by the gendarmes, whichever gomes first.

The last time the ToC went up Sierra, Carl got a great shot of Paulo Bettini off the back and not enjoying his California vacation. Another rider who was decidedly off the back (the peloton was shredded by then) responded to the cheers of encouragement by saying: "Don't clap, PUSH!" Pretty funny.

Only one stage in the Bay Area? Booo.

I'll still be there though. Driving.

Maybe.

Just checked out the ATOC page on stage 4 - had to LOL at the "the cyclists will pass Livermore's historic flag pole" and "the world's longest burning light bulb" comments. Might have to show up for this one.

Agree it is going to be a zoo (in a good way) at the top of Sierra. I may be slower but it is awesome to climb it before them and pretend I'm not :-)

I wouldn't drive 5 minutes to watch a bunch of juicers in spandex, but that's me. WWF on bikes.

No kidding. I imagine support vehicles and such parked in the traffic lane for a mile or so past the finish line.

I just did this ride a couple weeks ago, but I did quimby road instead of Sierra road. Quimby is a lot harder.

Is it? That makes me feel better. At about 15 I rode my 10 speed (that's 2x5=10) from Santa Clara to Hamilton and back. I took Quimby because it looked shorter on my CAA map.
Having moved away 25+ years ago; I've always wanted to go back and ride Hamilton (and Diablo and Mt U and Mt Tam and ...)

Yesterday, Amgen sent out the host city e-mail for San Jose

https://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.../san-jose.html

I imagine they'll have all the vendors and stuff in a park or some place with a big screen, and then shuttle the podium and jersey guys down there after the finish on the top of Sierra for the ceremonies. Anybody know anything else? It just doesn't seem like it's going to generate the same amount of enthusiasm as a regular finish town event.

The actual top of Sierra will be a zoo, so I might decide to stay right before it flattens out, so that we still get to see them at the suffering part of the climb. No matter where, it will be madness!
