Hey guys and gals, I will be in town (San Francisco) next week with an entire day to kill. I will be able to bring my bike, but am staying out near the airport (doubletree near bayside park). Can anyone give me some ideas on a decent ride from this area? I would like to be able to get out to the PCH for some riding. Is there a suggested way to get to it from this area? I could get the guy that I am travelling with to take me to a good starting point in our rental car if there is a "must do" ride that isn't easily accessible from my hotel. If you had one day in the area to ride, what would be your "must do" ride?
Thanks in advance

Lots of truly worthwhile rides round here. Hwy 1 (PCH is kind of a SoCal thing) isn't that great a ride - sure the views are stunning but the traffic can make it a suboptimal experience. Without knowing what kind of riding you're interested in consider
- South Bay: 50-60mile loop up Old La Honda down to Pescadero then back up Stage Rd and Hwy 1 to Tunitas Creek
- East Bay: Mt Diablo north or south gate - ~11miles of gorgeous up, easy to make loops
- North Bay: Mt Tam or the Paradise loop perhaps

Thanks for the heads up on the PCH. I thought I was set on riding it based on my experience around SoCal......didn't realize it wasn't as great around the bay area.

HWY1 is OK, but I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way for it. Beaker's suggestions are good. If you do something like his south route you'll be able to enjoy riding a good part of 1, and the rest of the routes (old la honda, la honda, pescadero creek, tunitas, stage, etc) are all very awesome. You can take Caltrain to Palo Alto to start this ride. https://www.chainreaction.com/coastloop.htm is essentially it, except I'd recommend starting in Palo Alto and riding Sand Hill/Portola to OLH.
Personally my vote goes to Diablo--I did it for the first time recently, and it was amazing. The view is amazing! BART makes this easy for you as well. I don't have good advise for a specific route--google around, there are a lot of suggestions.
