Hanging by the front wheel is easier. Just lift the rear wheel off the ground a couple of inches, and the hand on the handlebar finds the hook. Rear wheel hang means more lifting, of the heavier end.

It's normal for a derailleur bike to make a bit of noise during the shift as the chain moves to a different gear. It should be pretty quiet the rest of the time.

That's how I've always done it when brake flats were not accessible or non-existent. We had a punch with a curve ground into it so it fit the spring better than a flat punch or flat blade screwdriver.

Unjustified, IMO. There were paint problems early on, and some tube warping during heat treating. I would have heard about any significant frame failures.

Front derailleurs don't shift well under high chain tension, especially if you are in a smaller cog in back, because then you compound high tension with extra sideways chain flex during the shift.
