I just checked my team again because it was all a blur as to who I finally picked. And I did NOT make any changes. Woo hoo.
I did some piror coin flips between Barguil-Talansky-Roglic (pick 1) and PhilGil, deGendt, Bevin, Gallopin, and GVA (pick 2). I'm sure they will bring me highs and lows as this works out. It's extra special to be able to recall who I didn't pick and watch them excel. It really gives me some pain as payback and penance for all the Irish Catholic guilt I've managed to shake off over the years.

If we ever put real money on it, I may sign up for a few team permutations then late join with whichever one is running better a dozen stages in. You know, a few with Talansky, a few without. Pick one of the non-Talansky teams to enter the league.
Oops, did I say that out loud?

GC Yates Roglic
I pretty much threw this away I Had Valverde originally whom I still like. I just like Nario more. I thought Mollema was good value at 8 originally as he had a terrible Giro and has something to prove but Roglic whom I know less about about but has a solid season and seems to be a huge talent. I do not think Yates is a podium threat but has race well and I could see in white and love how he fears no one and attacks.
Climbers Nario Majka
Nario is my GC pick effectively and I am picking him for yellow He will get points in the mountains and overall
Majka hard not to like his preparation huge talent ride well in big races
Climbers this was tough as many are GC guys but I kept coming back to Dan Martin I think his talent is amazing He is leading his team and at 12 points I think him a loose cannon that can go after stages and maybe the podium. Just not more so than Majka..
Landa was on my radar vs Martin vs Majka big time but in the end unless there is a crash he is there to support Froome This more than anything else kept me from him and configurations with GT. Plus GT shoulder injury and possibly Landas fatigue from the Giro
Sprinters Sagan
If you do not pick Sagan there are only two choices you think he is going to crash out or you do not want to win. I do not think he will crash out. I could not justify the cost Kittel along with Sagan. It might be my undoing. I just do not see one guy dominating and think wins will be spread around
Unclassified Backare Tony Martin Phinney
Backaret was my 4 pointer as many times as I tried to work around not having one it did not work out. Maybe he gets in a break and gets some points for me. I felt he was the best 4 rider on a smaller team with the ability to strike out whenever
Tony Martin I expect to win both TT or at least place in top 3 and most likely be in Yellow for at least one day for 8 points pretty much a no brainer
Phinney
I made a move at the end and needed a six pointer. I thought Bennet was the best guy but went with Phinney as a feel good story and an American
Wild Card Dan Martin
I moved from GVA and Izagirre to Phinney and Dan Martin. While I look loaded with climbers I see Martin and Quintana as GC plays. I was going to go back to the GVA and Izagirre but ran out of time. This might be a really good course for GVA
With Roglic and Martin I expect a good first day

looks like many of us opted for the two sprinter approach. with relatively few top-end sprinters in
the running for roughly 7 stages, chances are pretty good that a solid wild-card sprinting choice
would yield a better points return than spending those points on another gc/climber choice where
the field is much broader. we'll see.
riders i picked (underlined) and considered:
all-rounders: valverde-mollema-uran-porte-thomas-izaguirre
my least fave category this year. chose valverde because of his versatility and he is generally a points
monster. chose mollema because of his consistency. one more aggressive, the other not so much. both know what
it takes to survive and thrive in a gt. both are supporting riders but are usually poised for a top ten finish
in case quintana or contador sputters/abandons. really wanted to take izaguirre but wanted to see him over one more gt. maybe the next gt he rides. need about 1,600 points between these "supporting" riders. last rider out:uran
climbers: majka-bennett-meintjes-chaves-dan martin-atapuma-caruso-nieve
majka is a fave rider and a kom/top ten threat. need 1,000 points from him. bennett had the tour of california success but is still relatively untested. really wanted meintjes but couldn't make it work. bennett is my as he goes i go pick.
i will need 700+ points from bennett to win this shebang. seriously thought about atapuma or caruso here but what the hell...last rider out: meintjes
sprinters: sagan-kittel-matthews-colbrelli-ebh
if things are going well, sagan and kittel will finish with 3k points between them. i liked any combination of sagan,
kittel, matthews and colbrelli but thought going cheaper with the last two potentially left too many points on the
table. last rider out: matthews
unclassified: knees-de gendt-gva-cataldo-machado-kreuziger-gilbert-tony martin-kirylenka-felline-pantano-kwiatkowski-vuillermoz-brajkovic-stybar-laporte-kung
hoo boy! such an embarrassment of choices in the 6 and 8-pointers. in the 4-pointers, not so much. knees was a pure points play looking to score assist points from froomie, thomas, et al, in team sky. de gendt for breakaway medium and high mountains plus kom and gva for the punchy finishes, porte assist points and potential breakaway points in the rolling/massif central stages. last riders out: felline-machado-kung.
tried not to duplicate teams when picking riders but just couldn't help it with sagan/majka. otherwise i woulda kept
felline and kung. probably shoulda.

Last year I took "the favorites" route and it did me well. This year I went the same way, spending what was needed on Froome, Sagan and Kittel. There are a lot of flat stages and so I see both Sagan and Kittel amassing points. Froome...well...you know. All the other choices are mostly based on who was available to add up to 100 but I still think Gesink could be a nice pick for me. It all goes in the crapper with crashes as we just saw with Valverde.

Well I lost Ion Izaguirre already and I don't have the sprinter I chose for some reason, which leaves me with no sprinter, so I think the Phaintingoats are already lamb chops.

Hoping this will be the year that the gendarmes descend on the Team Sky bus. They are such an obvious blight on the sport.

My strategy of I cannot afford Sagan and Kittel did not work out so well today and possibly from this point on. Kittel was a beast today great effort.
My feel good pick of Phinney is working out better than I imagined so far
I got lucky as I was going to change back to Valverde and Izagirre as I had in my line up. It is a shame to see both those riders out on the first day.

While he's not one my riders, it was great to see Phinney's performance today. Nice to see him rewarded with the polka dots also but that will probably be short lived. Tomorrow looks good for Sagan...and probably a dozen others. Weather has certainly played a factor so far but I'm glad the roads were dry in Liege. 10% chance of rain tomorrow so likely dry.

"oops! unclipped! that's okay, I'll clip back in and still beat these guys!"
I saw him do it at the World Championships, again at the TT in the Tour of California, and again today. You'd think they'd just lock him in to those pedals!
