Milan - San Remo 2018

I watched it live. Won't spoil the result for you if you haven't watched it yet.

Bad crash for Mark Cavendish.

Watch his somersault....

Fantastic race, and a fantastic result as far as I'm concerned. I confess to being a fan of today's winner. To my mind one of the best, if not the best, in the current era.

Cavendish is not having a good start to his year.

Also, it was a great finish. I'm glad I didn't check here before watching...

Cavendish broke a rib to go along with his other broken rib. He has an intimate relationship with asphalt lately.

Does he crash a lot in general? I've only gotten into watching pros recently, but it seems like he rides in a way that leads to crashes...

As far as the race, it was a great finish, though I wonder why no one else pushed to catch down the Poggio and after?

He crashed out of Abu Dhabi and Tirreno Adriatico this season and the TdF last season.
Milan San Remo was excellent. This year was the first time I've seen it.

He's a sprinter so normally is towards the front in the hectic sprint for the line in stages/races and will inevitably crash more than someone who targets the General Classification (GC) in stage races, a natural climber type or a domestique whose role is to do the donkey work for the team star(s).

Nibali is recognised as probably the best descender in pro racing and had a lead of about 8 seconds by the top of the Poggio, most were probably counting on limiting his gains and the bunch catching him on the final flat 2km. Anyone in between would more than likely have been swallowed up by the bunch and have finished outside the top ten.

That makes sense, I just thought if someone pushed hard enough they would make it, but the sprinters definitely got close to him near the end.

Well that's been done before (1992) but not easy on a technical descent against a guy like Nibali who can judge corners better than anyone.

The sprinters were close but Nibali still had time to sit up over the line. They were all given the same time but he judged it perfectly and won fairly comfortably in the end.

About 10 years ago there was a guy who crashed on the descent of Poggio or Cipressa; over the guard rail and wrapped his femur around a light pole or something... it was a disturbing visual.

A single descender has a big advantage over even a small chase group on a descent like that... and the group has a big advantage over the finishing kms... that's what made this final so good - VN timed it to perfection.

Yeah fantastic finish by probably the best descender in the peloton.
That last three k must have been tough. You could see the hand position changing the head up and down but he kept turning the gear and got there.
I may be wrong but did he try this in 2014 but got caught. But now i think about did he attack on the on the first climb and got caught before the last one. I seem to remember a sky rider in there as well, G Thomas perhaps.
Best finish since Kelly in 92. Both beautifull finishes by fantastic riders.

I feel bad for Cavendish. I'm also surprised that there was no official (police?) with a red flag in front of the big yellow bollard.
