Climbing Cuito Negro:
"Rabobank climbers Robert Gesink and Laurens Ten Dam were horrified at their experience. "I have never seen anything as hard than the Cuitu Negru," Gesink said. "This last climb is hell, for a fact. The last three kilometres were horrible. I almost fell off the back of my bike."
Ten Dam echoed his sentiments. "It was perhaps a great show for the spectators, but not for the riders. When I came down again, I saw other riders still going up, and it was just unbelievable to watch, terribly steep. I rode with a compact cassette for the very first time in my life. And in the end, I needed it! It was no fun, I was in a cave of pain. Horrible."

holy vuelta...this has been a fantastic grand tour...amazing...giro wasn't bad either...did they have that long race in france this year? all i remember was a sky team training ride....

The main problem you have with triples is that you have several gear ratios repeated (or combinations of gears that are really close) all the way around, and for competition pretty much is a waste or gears, for a normal guy is ok but for racing is just a bad use of maybe half of the gears because the guy simply wont use them. The other thing is that a j-doe that uses a triple probably is not even close to the strength even the weaker pro racer has.
To put it in perspective, probably a pure sprinter pro can out climb a regular j-doe w/o any problem.
The only pro I have seen using triple have been Jenny Longo back in the 80s, no idea if other pros used them, now a days better go with a compact crankset than a triple anyways.

This race is what the TdF should have been. Totally awesome stage today and that sick climb on Monday was, well, sick. Would love to try it though and see if I fall over.
