[Stage 18] Gap / Alpe-d'Huez (172.5KM)

[Stage 18] Gap / Alpe-d'Huez (172.5KM)

It's time to climb more mountains, and in some cases climb them twice!

Should be a great stage, lots of chances to make things happen at the top of the GC today. There's been some talk of shortening the stage depending on the weather due to the descent (Froome in particular was quoted as saying he hopes they make it only 1 ascent if it is raining), but I can't see any official updates on it yet today. Fingers crossed rain doesn't hit too hard, though there is some forecast.

Id like to see Voigt,Moser and Van Garderen stay away atleast for awhile in this break. I want to see lots of attacks from Saxo and Movistar. It would be a great stage win for Molma(sp).

It has been a great tour so far, really enjoyable. This stage looks set to provide fireworks too. I don't want to make any predictions, I just want to see good racing. I'd like to see Froome lose a bit of time purely from a spectators point of view so make these last couple of mountain stages good viewing!

Not sure why we all get so excited about alpe d'huez really, the crowd effectively nullify large portions of the climb forcing riders to either wait til the final 3 kms or attack at the very foot.

I know barriers would be expensive all the way down so why can't they just put rope along a lot of the climb?

Its hard enough mashing up those climbs, but to do it with a bunch of screaming idiots in your face... gotta hand it to those riders.

WOW, figured they were just whining a bit about the descent, but now i can see it, it is barely a track, this is going to be a cringy watch for 10 mins or so.

Speaking of descending. Anyone know why Nibali decided to sit this one out?

Not sure, he did say way back he was unlikely to ride both.

Contador attacking on the dangerous descent, Froome wanted to go but looks like he has been told to hold back.

Interesting........they are saying that they will be weighing bikes at the end of todays stage.
Do they Know something or just a random spot check after big climbs?

Commentators acting surprised, just relaying info so don't shoot me.

Something happened to Contador, before the break he was out front and now trying to catch the group?!?

Still emphasising the bike weighing thing, very unusual so they are saying, makes you wonder if they know something?

I'm reading Velonews' live updates....what's up with all the bike changes? Seems like a really good race, looks like TVG might be in a good position to win.

Froome just strolling off the front again. Quintana gets across but Contador, Purito and Valverde left behind watching each other.

Much as i don't trust team sky at all, have to credit Froome for taking the race to the others, ten times the quailty of Wiggins last year.

Its a shame Joaquim Rodriguez took a while to hit his stride, looks like he is possibly the second or third best rider at the tour the last few days.

"The race referees have announced that any rider with a black jersey will be allowed to feed with 4 kilometers to go. This will be broadcast on a scrambled radio channel to be announced to select members of the inner circle. That is all. "

Quite a stage. I wonder what the Commissaires will do about the illegal feed. It's usually a fine, but given that Porte appeared to defy an explicit instruction from officials I wouldn't be wholly surprised if they threw him out, which would hurt Froome tomorrow.

Quintana and Rodriguez making Froome look mortal, today. Both of them may ride their way onto Sunday's podium.

Rumours circulating that Contador changed his bike because it was announced that the UCI were planning a bike weight check at the finish. Make of that what you will...

Controversy! All over the place! Great ride by Quintana though I think I may have found a new favourite!

What a ride by Riblon French passion was out in force today. Adds to Rolland's win last year. Who can beat the French on Alpe d'Huez??
