Jens Voight

On September 18 he will attempt to break the One Hour Record of 49.7km (30.9 miles)...he's apparently doing it at the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen.

Velodrome Suisse

Go Jens

Record is there for the taking, ever since the recent UCI decision to allow modern track bikes. & I think Jens has a very good chance to make it. He's done some great solo efforts in the past.

You gotta love the guy!

Just when you thought he was "retired", he comes up with this!

Absolutely superb way to REALLY go out of the sport while he is in top form.
Still retiring, but hey, what's another hour?

So back in the spring there was talk that Spartacus was going to go after the record, but that fizzled for some reason. AFAIK, It's been a long time since anybody even gave a serious effort at this event.

I Jens gets the record or even comes close, it's a sure bet that others will also try.

Well, his team did a lot of preparation already, for Cancellara's attempt. But he bailed out, for this year at least. So it might just be Voigt is even more of a team rider than he always has shown to be.

I kind of wonder if the rest of the guys who are suited to this have decided to let Jens go for it first. Cancellara, Wiggins, Martin and probably others can likely go faster than Jens for the hour. I think it is a great play for Trek to get the attention first on Jens and then they can followup Cancellara next year. At any rate, I hope he crushes it!

Tonight I rode my Hour Record Tribute to Jens: https://app.strava.com/activities/196047391

19.1 Miles on a one mile outdoor loop with lots of wind. Gearing was 50-17.
There are some 2% grades and several 1 % false flats too.
The slight down hill false flats should even it out but the wind has a lot to say about it.

It sure would be nice if Jens or anyone with access to these modern UCI bikes and a "merckx" bike would do a pair of actual rides (even short ones) for a comparison.

Or has someone and I missed it?

Jens! The Man! He did 206 laps! He did it! Jens Voigt crushed the hour record, riding 51.115km to top the previous 49.7km mark set by Sosenka in 2005

His lap times were actually faster near the end of the ride.

You can compare Boardman's different records for an idea;

A bit of time between each one. The Merckx-style one (in 2000) he beat Eddy by 10m.

Ah, thank you.

It looks like the 1993 effort would be the closest equipment to what Voigt road today. Other than Voight using the disc wheelset do you know of any other major differences?

The great thing is that Jens has opened a new era for the hour contest. I think that we all know that his record won't stand for long, but it's to his credit to have seized this moment and, at 43 y.o. to have done something so challenging. He really killed the old record, but probably Wiggins or Martin can do markedly better.

What do you think the record will be 2 years from now? 53 km, I'll bet. Or more. I wonder if anybody will approach Boardman's 56 km any time soon?

I think I came across a more direct comparison. From this cyclingnews article: Voigt hour record bittersweet for former US record holder Pearce | Cyclingnews.com on Colby Pearce:

"He raced back-to-back hours last October - first covering 49.8km with a full aerodynamic setup, and then a week later finishing 46.3km on a standard Athlete Hour ('Merckx') bike."

I ended up watching the last 20 minutes on a feed on Trek.com. Looks like Eurosport was covering it on tv. Great job Jens !
