I'm actually a folding guy, but figured you would know more about rims. Does anyone have experience with the Aerohead in 349mm? I just bought a pair, but can't help but think it's an error. I've never heard of them in this size.

I don't have 349 rims, but it sure looks like there's no such thing as a 349 Aerohead. OTOH, Aeroheat comes in 349. It looks similar but is wider. Anyway, the Aeroheads would be... maybe not too narrow but at least narrower than necessary for any tire you could find for 349.

The ArrowHeat 406 (20") rim is used on some trikes. My 2003 WW 3.4 came with ArrowHeat rims as original equipment. Now it is only used on the more expensive versions of the WW tikes. It has given me good service. The rim has stayed true in spite of over 5,000 miles on the trike. The stock tires on the trike are Kenda Kwests. They are a fairly wide tires. I'm pretty sure it would accommodate narrower tires if you chose them.

I'm no expert, but I think you can get 349 Stelvios in either 25 or 28mm - I'm not sure which - everything else for that rim size is fatter. (?) So there's no need for a 20mm wide rim. No bones about it, the Aeroheat is a nice rim.

It seems as if they are the only ones carrying this rim. I've tried to call, but no response.

Blazing, does this mean that one cannot run Scorchers on a 20mm Aerohead? I'll try to switch my order.

According to Sheldon Brown's compatibility chart, a 38mm (1.5") tire is not recommended for a 20mm rim. Sheldon's chart isn't set in stone, but I wouldn't recommend going that far into the 'forbidden zone.' Even if they fit and don't blow off, there's no aero advantage to such a narrow rim unless you've got an equally narrow tire.

I'm probably reading that chart wrong, but it looks like a 40mm tire is fine for a 20mm rim...What do I need to look at?

Oops, I think I looked at it wrong. I think the 'X'es mark the OK combinations not for forbidden ones. But I don't know what the inside width for an Aerohead is - if it's 20mm on the outside, it's certainly less than that on the inside. Depending on the actual inside measurement, a 40mm tire might be allowed or might at least be close.

You can find the rim you wanted a 16" AeroHeat in 349 size listed for $39.95 from Gaerlan's Bike Shop outside of San Francisco. I have had them build me a wheel a couple years ago. It was well built, shipped promptly, and at a fair price. Try www.gaerlan.com and go to the bike parts section under 349 wheels. They are a shop that caters to recumbent builders. I've mail ordered from them occasionally over several years and always was satisfied.

Thanks. Actually, they are the ones building my wheels for me, but J ran out of rims. So, I had to order the rims from a third party. The Every Bike Tire store called me back, by the way, to confirm the order. Took a bit, but they seem nice on the phone.

By the way, the Aeroheads are available, but the inner diameter is only 14mm, so I asked to change them. It seems as if they will only run Comets or Stelvios, and they are only 20gm lighter than the Aeroheats.
