DC Pirates' Pillages and Plunders

OK, new thread, for all pirate stuff.

The pirates are a group of drinkers with a riding problem. Many of us are fixed. Some of us aren't. On any pirate ride, you can ride any bike you'd like, and wear anything you'd like. If you're straightedge or under 21, you are welcome, but please know that we do ride from bar to bar, so you may feel left out. Newbies always welcome. Yarrr.

all our exploits have pretty much moved to our new forum:
https://www.dcfixed.com
(thanks to Spud, the host with the most!)

our past pillages include...
the tri-state margarita relay
the schnapps smuggler
the rum runner
sail the seven seas for scurvy cessation
the pilsner plunder
the Morgan's Mallet Marauder Massacre
the Halloween Haul Ass
the Clink's Cleared Celebration

we also play polo every-other-wednesday, and occasionally we race eachother on a high school running track. we're dorks like that.

AND scroll to the last page of this thread to see the latest tomfoolery that you're welcome to join up with.

if you're worried about finding us, pm me for a cell phone number.

[*edit] first things first let me post from the future [/edit]

alright, new thread. I can deal with that.

for the record, I love that "we're drinkers with a riding problem".
so true.. so true

lets start this off with a bang.
once again I've got goodies.
photos from this friday's ride.

so we started off in dupont circle by riding in what can only be described as a historic critical mass. I mean jeeeeeebus! there were alot of people there.

Now the pirates tend to keep our politics clear of our biking (you never know which way the wind may blow your sails!), but the Time's Up crew from NYC rolled down and we had to represent DC. By the time we rolled past the monuments we stretched for blocks and blocks and blocks. It really was impressive!

So after looping back through downtown, we picked up a few more pirates at sherwood forrest. And after heading to a stuffy bar in capitol hill (live by no rules! we sit where we want!), we found ourself at the warehouse bar outside the convention center.

but we ended up staying a getting a little "yarrrr"ish.. and thats when we met rocket c*ck and all hell broke loose.

from this point on no photos exist.
but there was a house party. rappelling down buildings. pizza smuggling. plundering of the innocent. and even something new to me.. jim beam stands (i wish to god i had photos. it was intense!)

point is. it got pretty debaucherous and one thing's for sure - we fought the scourge of scurvy and won! big up pirates!

ill see you on the streets maties.

I can vouch for that. I accidentally walked in on that action...and slowly backed out of the room. no judgement.

Myself, I succeeded without trying to offend some kind Ohioans, and then tried and didn't succeed at offending a preppy matador. Win some, lose some. I blame the drink-heavy front end of the evening being out of piratical cosmic balance with the ride-heavy back end of the evening. Bad Captain. Collars up on Tuesday!

yup.
the critical mass last friday was, to me, somewhat of a "spot the badly modified bianchi pista" event.

Glad to hear Friday was a smashing success! I just got back on the bike today after four grueling days of not riding due to a strained Achilles tendon....I've never felt so sedentary! btw, thanks for the call on Friday, tink. I was happily enjoying my second (yes, second) bottle of wine.

October 4, I'm sooo there. And my vote on Chicago is quickly shifting towards 'yes'! I'll keep you posted, and see y'all soon!

Yes, there is...in fact there are many wrong ways to ride a fix. But, since I ain't no facist/absolutist/republican/member of bush's cabinet/rothschild/pyschopath I try to live to let live.

so, go ye dc pirates to pillages and plunders
for your heart's glee and to while away the time
and cast away your eyes from the Pista blunders
since its "none of our business" nor a high crime;
for all a pirate needs is a bottle of rum with a slice of lime.

Betrayed by treachery, the cow find himslef stocked in confines in brooklyn. Chained and forced into hard labor sorting and unloading crate upon crate of back (and mind) breaking torment
He plans his escape, and in his plan he shall scavange the dock houses and gather wares to arm yet another ride. Beware chimbly, the combination may offen your NJS Kierin sensibilities...hahahahaaaa (with more over the top sinister twist than you would normally expect)

Btw: Will there be post seagull pillaging?

Should make the 4th no prob. I'll even bring an OnGaurd lock.

Where's the Lady Pirates? I don't see Chimbly or LBK in that group shot.

Chimbly was indisposed, and I was conscientious objecting out of the frame, about to be wholy creeped out by the papier mache W. head that began gallivanting around shortly after.

well, rensho is officially in a box and in the hopefully capable hands of UPS. let's all send her good vibes for a safe (if expensive) journey.

and yeah... i'm getting a little crazy. as bad as i want superbe cranks in 165, i'm not willing to buy these:
https://cgi.ebay.com/Suntour-Superbe-...QQcmdZViewItem
why? they're not track cranks. bah.

also, Rincewind is now joining us in Chicago! Hooray!

also... a couple folks have talked to me about scraping together fg or ss bikes in time for chicago. the easiest way to do this would be to 'ghetto fix' the bike you're already riding, by swapping out the rear wheel with something like an IRO fix hub wheel and buy a new chain (NOTE: track ends are usually spaced at 120mm, but few road bikes are. make sure you measure your dropouts before ordering a new wheel!). remove derailleurs/derailleur hanger, and leave the new chain on the center ring of your triple, building it to be as tight as possible when your wheel is set in the rear dropout. the nice thing about this is, as much as your chainline will suck, you'll stilll have two breaks. and you can go back to normal if you don't like it.
option two is to buy a complete bike on craigslist and do the same.
option 3 is to do either of the above, and swap the cranks for appropriate track cranks to improve the chainline. IRO makes good cheapies, as does Sugino (RD's are cheap).
the easiest option is to buy a IRO complete or a pista for $550.
lemme know if you have questions.

oh there was foam.
there was lots of foam

we wrapped that frame up like there was no tomorrow!
i can't wait to see what it looks like when it gets back.
i think we're all going to be a little jealous.

now regarding chicago.

people have talked about ghetto-fixing their hubs just to have a ride while there.
you know, the jury is still out on that one.
as much as i would love to rep DC by showing up with fine looking machine,
I'm also feeling hesitant to do it that way.

Is there anything (beyond the obvious) wrong with showing up to a SS/FG meetup with a derailleur?

no. but...
you'll be left out of the track events: skids, trackstands, velodrome races, etc.
then again, that means more time for sparks drinkin'.

he does know- he was on the beer festival ride, silly.
and he does have a point- it's not a pirate meetup... or a bf meetup. everyone is welcome, of course, but i'm encouraging folks to find a way to have a fix. i'm willing to help.

although you are correct,
i think this smacks of the exclusive attitude (read: borderline elitist) we're trying to avoid here, both in this forum, and as a community of cyclists.
isn't everyone always saying "its not what you ride, but that you ride that counts"?
would you willingly turn away one who came to watch the craziness unfold?
no of course not.

that does not however, mean that I wouldn't prefer, or won't for that matter, to show up with a nice little fix of my own.

this is all just "hypothetical" you dig?

dude, people. we're all going to be in small cars together. let's play friendly, no?

i don't think *new* was being elitist. he was stating fact. this is the SS/FG board. the pirates have adopted it as our own, true, but it was SS/FG before we got here, and we understood that those were the terms of the board. Also, this is a SS/FG meetup, and we knew that when we signed up, and those were the terms of the trip.

Is that being exclusive? No. This is a board that people self-select to be on because they ride, or want to ride, or are interested in SS/FG. I think it's ok that people want to protect that- that's the reason there is a SS/FG board in the first place, you know. If it makes you feel better, we can move pirate stuff to the road bike board.

Are people being elitist? No. Are they reminding you of the obvious? Yes. Will people be jerks to you if you show up with gears? No. Will we make fun of you? Depends on how drunk we are. Will there be some events you can't take part in? Yes. Do you need to be understanding, since you're the one choosing to go to a FG event with no fix? Yes.
