Thanks! It's a sweet bike so far. With fenders (now w. flaps and rear light mounted) and Brooks, it's 24lbs. And the fork is pretty wicked: it's bend only near the bottom and has generous rake.

24 pounds? Not bad at all.

Also, the 3sp sturmey fixed gear is out too. For about half the price of the 10sp mtb cassette alone.

I saw a nice Norco single-speed with the belt-drive system and disc-brakes in the old catalogue and I figured it would be a perfect winter bike, it even had tabs for fenders. But damn, it was like $1200 or something nutty like that. I guess the prices for the belt-drive stuff will come down a bit once they gain in popularity but for now, they seem pretty high...

I don't think the trek belt drive is close to that price.

You're most welcome. Thanks for the pints! The first load from my garage the other evening was 1.25 metric tonnes, filled the truck, and was less than half what was there. Lord, the home renovation industry is wasteful, but the shoddy, moldy materials have to go.

Hmm... that Norco doesn't look like a lot of bike for the money once you take away the belt drive. Also, has anyone done the belt system with an IGH? To be fair, these aren't bad bikes - it's just that we aren't into $1200 SS city/utility bikes, but there should be some market for these out there. Maybe a system like bikeshare would benefit from reduced maintenance?

The only obvious loser in the belt-drive category has to be that Trek Madone CF SS monstrosity.

This is the one I was thinking of, the MSRP is 1175$USD but I am sure you could get it for a bit lower than that.

I'd love one of those 12lbs Madone SS belt-drive bikes with a 47X15 setup, I'd never need another bike ever again...

i don't see the need for a belt drive on that norco. how much maintenance can a bike like that with a chain instead of a belt really be?

i could see wanting a belt on a motorcycle, from what i hear the chains on those are a pain in the butt, but a bike chain is fairly light and easy to maintain

you also have a lot more options with a bike chain, you don't need to get a new chain whenever you change your gear ratio

Except that it is carbon and is unlikely to last that long. I have been wrenching bikes for more years than I care to mention. Until recently a busted frame was a fairly uncommon thing. Since carbon became "The Next Big Thing" I have lost count of the # of busted frames I have seen. One guy has gone thru 2 of the same model in 2 years. Great for bike companies....bad for the consumer.

There are a few. NOKON and Aztec Powerlines are 2. I have used both and hated them. Pain in the ass to install/maintain and expensive. They are a few grams lighter but not worth the negatives IMHO.

Is there a particular region on the bike where you see failure more often than not with CF? To be honest, I've never ridden a CF bike. Ever. I should just take one on a test ride to see if I notice any serious difference that can't be attributed to different wheels & tires.
