Can't get a set of Open Pros in... and other suggestions for 36H/machine sidewall rims for the SS? Having them build onto the IRO hubs I got last year. CXP33's hmm?

Ambrosio Excellights it is.

I read the article and I wasn't sure about the satire. The best portion was about how cyclists increase global warming by breathing heavy, which lead me to think that it was satire, but the comments about how cyclists don't get tickets didn't seem like satire.
|
Yes me too I thought it was confusing. The CO2 thing was too stupid to be serious, but for the rest it was not obvious but was still stupid.
Indeed the roads are payed by property tax, i.e. by any resident (renter or landlord) of the city. In the biketo site they make a good point that bikes cause much less damage to the roads. And for insurance they also make the point that even if you wanted some, you can't. It doesn't exist! |
A bizarre argument, and poor satire at best, yet... while I would tend to dismiss any notion of bicycle licensing/taxation for all the obvious reasons, particularly the health benefit, what if it provided something for cyclists in return? The problem with the health benefit is that it is impossible to quantify without years of enormous age-matched control studies. Motorists will not buy into that argument here and now. On the other hand, cash that is paid up front is a very different matter. If cyclists did put real money on the table, motorists would have to put up and shut up for once and for all. Would that be worth $100/year?
|
i don't think anything is going to get them to shut up
if you believe bikes don't belong on the roads despite the laws, you're going to believe the same thing despite licensing |
If we get a license I don't want to have to attach it to the back of my bike like the last time. They were ugly. I'd be happy if it is a letter "B" on your driver's license, in the same way you can have a driver's license for a truck and it's just a different letter on the license.
I mean Ontario would be bankrupt if they had to print separate license for the number of bikes that people have on this board! |
Most of us already pay a considerable amount in taxes to ride where we are supposedly already allowed to. It's just that the brother (motorists) didn't hear mom and dad give us permission to ride our bikes because he was in the garage working on his car. Why the Frak would I need to pay to license so that I might perceptually justify riding on the streets that I'm already allowed to by law? What kind of backasswards logic is that? IF the powers/money grubbers that be can PROVE motoring infractions will be enforced AND cycling WILL somehow magically become safer b/c I have a wee little plate on my bike, then here's my 100bucks. To be willing to pay for your cockamamy ideas, you have to prove added value. So far I see lip service to motorists with no change in how we'll be treated on streets other than as a better trackable revenue stream.
Buddy honks at me from behind as I carve left around a van turning right. Not mean mind you. So at the light I say ..was there a problem? You turned left!!! Yes... and I never left my lane, I turned around the van turning right. But I didn't know what you were doing. Fair enough.. I guess I'm riding just like cars do with no signals, although to be fair I didn't need to signal as I wasn't leaving my lane. Isn't that what you motorists want..us to be just like cars? You could see it sinking in his head.... damn the punk on the bike is right, HE IS RIDING LIKE A CAR DRIVES. All I can say to motorists is be careful what you ask for ... you want us to be REAL vehicles, then you better be ready for massive lane taking during rush hour on all manner of city streets. Get a license to ride a bike lane.... oh no you don't, I'm a full on road user. Hell I might even be tempted to take it to the Gardner, for cross town action. Still can't create a linkage to drivers' license as many folks simply don't/won't get 'em. As a system it HAS to be applicable across the board. |
There's no way any sort of fee/licence will go through. It will never be anything other than revenue negative. And while oiks might say "Do it anyway", they're not the ones accountable for the money and there is really no tangible benefit for anyone.
Walker is as daft as they come. It'll never go through. You can bet all the bureaucrats have been telling him "Don't do it" and he's still doddering along with it. You guys should all line up for the rebate cheques for all the overpaying you do on already on Toronto streets. The cost of upkeep is not the result of bike traffic. |
Well you know it's because of the bikes being dragged under cars that rips up the pavement.
|
hey you guys saw that ad on CL asking for a mechanic to work at 10$/h with his own tools on beater bikes? And asks for a resume on top of that... hilarious.
Reminds me. It happens often that when I say to a non-biker coworker that I bike and do my tune-ups, they ask me to tune-up their old bike that's been in their shed for the last 5 years... "I'll give you money!" |

A quick question for the mechanics among us----why would a very deep pothole screw up my threadless headset? I had about a millimetre of play after I hit it; I've readjusted it and it is fine but did I just not have it tight enough before? I've hit millions of potholes and never had a problem before.... |

Heh, yep, pretty much. I actually found one friend's kid a great BMX at Value Village for $15 last spring to replace his non-functioning bike.

Everyone making their list for the bike show? I'm going with a friend to see about buying her a road bike, but I can't think of much that I need. A tubular tire and sunglasses are the only thing I can think of.
What about everyone else? |
