iherald 10-15-09 02:00 PM

Who carries around a 15 mm wrench to get pedals? Crazy.

elTwitcho 10-15-09 02:06 PM

Probably the same dick that carries around 15mm wrenches to steal wheelsets. That's lame as hell dude, sorry to hear it

jet sanchEz 10-15-09 02:12 PM

Total suckage. A neighbour had a front wheel stolen from her old janky CCM the other day. The bike is from the '70s and I would guess the wheel is about 8lbs. People are just crazy.

exhibitx 10-15-09 03:23 PM

a wheel is a wheel when you need to sell something for some crack

whoever stole those pedals knew what they were doing, that sucks

A great series of articles linked form Bike TO

http://www.copenhagenize.com/2009/09...ive-parts.html

nice quote:
It is impossible to escape the conclusion that most people and organisations who advocate cycle paths are not actuated by motives of benevolence or sympathy, although they may declare that their sole concern is the welfare of the cyclist ... A great deal of the cycle-path propaganda is based on a desire to remove cyclists from the roads. That is why the request for cycle paths is so often accompanied by a suggestion that their use should be enforced by law. Therein lies a serious threat to cycling.

From 1937! Anyway it's an interesting take of why cycling has, in an isidious way, become a source of fear in many people's eyes.

iherald 10-18-09 09:37 AM

i wasn't able to go, how was the bike show?

LordsOnly 10-18-09 12:35 PM

Good,

Stuff sold out fairly quickly, before noon even. Lots of great little sales, like 2 buck tubes, 10 dollar ultra sports cheap jerseys/shorts, etc. There wasn't much in bikes, or even crazy prices.

I got a pair of gloves with faux carbon fibre knuckles for punching mother****ers in the face.

iherald 10-18-09 07:59 PM

Brad: Since I didn't make it to the show to pick up a rim, I'll come by the shop to pay for the hub and you guys can continue to have the rim on order. Thanks.

I saw the cops ticketing cyclists today at Queen West and John. They had about 5 people over and were giving them tickets for running the red while going west-bound. One guy was pleading with them and the cop gave him an extra ticket for not having a bell...

Just a heads up for y'all, I think it is a $180 ticket + points for running a red...

jeremywhitehorn 10-18-09 10:35 PM

the show seemed to feature all the usual suspects. i manged to find myself a nice little rapha winter cap from wheels of bloor but that's about it.

Man what the hell? The cops have been on several bike blitzes since the Bryant incident and for what? Where is this epidemic of cyclist caused accidents that justifies this crap?

Better question still, where the hell is the bike Union in all of this? Why is the only major voice that's supposed to be advocating for cyclists in this city not speaking out?

Anyone who allows themselves to lose demerit points on a bike infraction is a sucker!

Well, in fairness, you really shouldn't go through a red light on your bike, it is dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. Having no bell is a dumb cash-grab ticket though.

And yeah, for years now, I have been keeping my driver's license in the back of my wallet, and I never show it unless I am applying for a loan or something.

A friend of mine sent me a link to a Youtube video called "DON'T TALK TO COPS!" and it is very interesting. It is a lecture given by a professor of law and he speaks about how regular citizens are best protected under the law by simply not talking to the police. It is American law so it is slightly different but everyone should watch it.

I've personally been in many situations where the cops railroaded a person and I know how it works but it is still a great video.

elTwitcho 10-19-09 10:05 AM

The red light thing I can understand why the law exists. Setting up blitzes to catch cyclists doing it when it is statistically pretty benign strikes me as being motivated by an anti-cycling disposition more than any pragmatic rationale though. As has been referenced here before, if 90% of cycling fatalities are the fault of motorists, where are the weekly "don't drive like a bonehead" blitzes? When was the last time you saw a string of cars pulled over at a stop sign for rolling stops?

And as for the bell thing, imagine if they made drivers put a bell on their steering wheel or face arbitrary police stops and 100 dollar fines. Why do we view that as acceptable on bikes but in a car it would be harassment?

The police have a serious hate on for cyclists and for a city hall that is supposedly pro-cycling this summer they've let us down big time

yes i believe that is the class stop snitchin 101 with processor ice cube

In traffic, if my thumb has to come off my bars to do it, it ain't going to get done. That's like undoing your seatbelt to honk the horn during evasive moments.

No, watch it, it is advice one should follow if held under arrest by the police. The "snitches get stitches" thing is beyond dumb.

jet sanchEz 10-19-09 12:45 PM

dang, is it a great cycling day or what? Just cool enough to not get too sweaty when flying, I love it.

skuz 10-19-09 01:25 PM

Today might have been my favourite day cycling all year. I had a pleasant encounter with a police officer (he was operating a speedtrap, he clocked me and cheered me on, came pretty close to the speed limit), AND I found out that the Queensway bicycle lane was extended westward over the bridge that has the onramp for the highway. I've always been a bit scared of that bridge, with the horrible potholes and the people accelerating to highway speeds, but now its a lovely ride. Also, the weather was positively gorgeous. :)
