It was a joke.

Working the bike show was a blast, despite being sick with a cold! I'd gladly volunteer to do it again, because it's awesome fun to deal with people when you have no real fear of repercussions when selling them stuff. Sometimes I miss crappy retail jobs, if for nothing but the personal interaction with various different people.

On a related note: I've learned there are basically two types of bike shoppers; those that hum & haw over $40 helmets (all basically the same crap), and those that just go right to the high end stuff.

Has anyone seen the Republic Bikes? I'm sure they're not high quality but for $400 you get a full bike and a lot of choice in colours:

Those are the people who run the Urban Outfitters bike shop

Just saying, should be enough to turn anyone off

The few reviews I've seen have been generally unfavorable. Plastic bits, parts are really low quality and prone to breakage, hubs are bad and the frame is gas pipe unbutted hi-tensile. They do have some snazzy colours though

Mechanic advice: How can I tell if my mountain bike derailer is bent? I was riding over to the Don Valley on the weekend and my bike was making some serious noise. I looked and it didn't look as though the chain was entering the derailer straight. If I was in the smallest cog and biggest chainring it was fine, but going to a bigger cog caused the problem.

Is the derailer shot?

LordsOnly 10-20-09 10:11 AM

could be bent, or all you need is a quarter turn on one of your peramiter screws

tuz 10-20-09 01:17 PM

Maybe you need to adjust the indexing? Hard to tell from the interwebs.

Now. Does anybody have tubular wheels or rims they're looking to get rid of? I'm starting to like them.

jet sanchEz 10-20-09 02:15 PM

Road or track?

tuz 10-20-09 02:38 PM

Well I'm looking for road, but I'd have use for both! Let me know. (geez there are 9 wheels scattered in my small place)

Hard to diagnose with so little info/visuals but one of either bent hanger, mis-adjusted or pooched derailleur, shot housing and/or cable...all of the above?

Imagine how nice Toronto would be to ride a bike in if we had the same attitude most other cities do for the majority of the population who are actually inhabiting the space rather than just passing through in their cars.

illenvillain 10-21-09 08:27 AM

we can only dream...

Flimflam 10-21-09 09:02 AM

Yeah really, I like how they've seemingly really thought about how the different classes of lane interact at intersections, etc. to ease that whole confusion that seems to happen with regular bike lanes. Seems a very very cool system, I wonder how practical it is in the grand scheme of navigating the city.

I doubt Toronto has $1 to spare for that kind of endeavour, let alone introducing bike-only signals, etc. That being said, I don't think the driving-masses would welcome it all that much either. There's too much traffic demand on roads here - no way they'd be willing to deal with that can of worms at City Hall.

I didn't check the map on the page, and I don't know NYC at all but most of the scenes in the video looked to be non-downtown core - in which case Toronto could possibly take that on - as outside the core there does indeed seem to be a bit more wiggle room IMO.

kergin 10-21-09 09:48 AM

You know what's kind of funny? The different feeling you get commuting from the east end into the core. There seem to be less cyclists going from east to west in the morning than there were going west to east when I lived on Vaughan Rd. Also, King St. between Yonge & Jarvis seems really sketchy for some reason. Wanton jay-walkers and cabbie cut-offs seem really frequent there...

Taxis in front of the King Edward hotel are brutal.

iherald 10-22-09 09:05 AM

Anyone know a good place to get embossed stationary in the city?

Edit: got some online

I_bRAD 10-23-09 12:41 AM

What a beautiful night out there for a ride! Went for a quick spin that turned into a few hours :)

Sorry for the obscure post out of the blue: Does anyone know a machinist shop in the GTA that will bore out a stuck (i.e. chemically friggin' bonded) aluminum seatpost? Thanks!

jeremywhitehorn 10-25-09 07:23 AM

there has been some discussions here from our resident experts in extracting stuck seatposts. im sure if you search this thread you'll find some sage advise.

I think ammonia will clear out the oxidation and let you get it out. If not ammonia there is some other product, but it should certainly be doable without boring it out

cavit8 10-25-09 09:33 AM

It appears Nerdsgirth got hitched. Congratulations Mark!
