Awright, I thought about this question and decided that although it has nothing to do with fixed-gear, it is a regional query, so I'm going to go for it.

A few days ago I introduced myself and mentioned I will be moving to TO in September. I just signed a lease for an apartment on Euclid & College. All utilities are included... except internet. Honestly, I didn't expect it would be, but this leaves me in a bit of a dead zone: I am from Michigan, and so I have no idea who to buy internet access from in Toronto, and how much I should expect to pay here. I have already heard horror stories about cell phone plans in Canada, so I'm prepared for the worst. (It looks like the girlfriend and I will share a Fido contract for wireless.)

So...
Torontonians who use an internet forum to discuss things, what service provider do you use for access? Better yet, what should I use?

Hi TylerM I use Bell Sympatico. Most people either use Bell or Rogers for Inet connection, I prefer Bell as its DSL.

I think it was more like lack of wind... 'cause it was totally calm down there.

Back and exhausted from the 24hrs. I don't even know where our slow/slacker team finished but we all had a fantastic time regardless. We had wins in the solo category (23 laps!) as well as 5 man. Our 250+years team finished in 2nd. I busted off a 1:04 on the opener and managed to beat the team manager to boot. My night lap was a bust when my lights died 2/3 thru the lap....followed a spent solo rider for the last 1/3 and still managed a 1:12. Got woken out of my peaceful slumber yesterday morning to be told we didn't have anyone left that wanted to do any more laps...slackers. Jumped out of the sleeping bag, crammed down a banana and powergel and busted off a 59:36 for my final lap. I should go out sleepy and underfed every lap....it seems to work for me. Good to see nerdsgirth up there rockin it...good job bro..excellent finish.

yeah.. great times. Ran into Mr. Angry Johnny on my way out of the park yesterday and he asked if I was interested in doing Hot August Nights too.. Hells yes! Also: My lower back tells me I want a full suspension. ;)

I have Rogers, but thats because my cable, cell phones and house phone are as well, so I get 15% of each bill.

54km before 9am. Never thought I'd get up that early to ride to Hurontario St. Stupid wind, get all the way there and nothing. Not even a firecraker. Nice ride with Brad and Nerdsgirth.

Internet in TO should own whatever you had in the states. You generally have two choices.

1) Cable from Rogers (6.0M/800k @ $52 more if you don't actually have cable T.V)
2) xDSL from BELL (5M/800k @ $55) or TekSavvy (5M/800k @ $30/mo)

I'd expect both services to be available where you live.

- Rogers has download/upload caps (100gb COMBINED (Upstream and down) per month for their top tier service listed above). while Bell does not. They also packet shape and deliberately throttle ALL torrent traffic. Don't use them.

- Bell has no caps and doesn't throttle BT traffic but speeds vary depending on line condition and how far you are from ter central office

- TekSavvy has garnered a really good rep via broadbandreports via their forum. Last I heard you needed to purchase your modem from them to gain service. No personal experience.

I guess you could go with a phone/internet package with bell if you don't care about cable tv (this is when things get tricky). I have a pay as you go with bell.

Yeah, you looked more than a little groggy when I came back to camp. :P Funny, I'd seen other people come back into the transition area from a lap to discover no teammate waiting for them and I thought, "man, it's gotta suck to go exhaust yourself from a lap and then have to deal with that kind of bs". Well, then there was me yelling "three seventy-five!" for a couple minutes before I saw Jim and rode back to camp. Oi! I felt bad that you had to have your beauty sleep interrupted because people wussed out. I don't know how old our team leader was, but it seems like the younger end of the team were the first to give up (except me :P). Did you give Emma **** after? What was her excuse? :P Had I been earlier in the rotation I would have done another lap I think.

40 years+ FTW! Jim, Bob and I did a total of 9 laps, 3 each. All the 20ish kids only did 2. Emma was spared my wrath.

I went to Hardwood yesterday and it was fun. I did notice that I have way more problems doing mountain bike hills, as they are steeper (and therefore harder to do with one leg). But otherwise it was a fun day.

Yeah, next time I definitely want to get out earlier in the start order I think. That was a lot of sitting around waiting for my first lap! Plus in retrospect I would have liked to have gotten in 3 laps. I think I had it in me, but only if I'd paced myself for it and had a bit more of a break between #2 and #3.

I definitely need to get myself a lighting system though. What was the deal with those Princeton-Tec systems? Were they selling them for ultra cheap? I wonder if I can still get in on that deal. :S

They had em on offer for $250 I think. Dont know how much under MSRP that is but from what I heard that is a pretty good deal. I am gonna use my existing system for a secondary light and pick up something that I can get more than 1 lap on a charge.

More on topic: (un)fortunately, I missed the ride of destruction this morning due to a job interview.. but maybe I can make it this time. Any announcements on when it's been rescheduled to?
