Also Biseagal, note that Maelcum's webpage has been poached somehow. Many of the airlines I've flown my bike on require a bag at a minimum and they'll sometimes supply it. Check with them first. The last thing you need is to scurry packing a bike before boarding if the ticket dweeb is having a bad day. While just handing it to them may seem a good option having seen how these primates load bikes, you're begging for something getting pooched. Loose bars and and exposed bike mean stuff will get caught up if they're all stacked together. I've seen a huge pile of bikes come crashing off a conveyor because they got tangled up. I've used a tarp and packing my bike similarly as shown here http://www.jimlangley.net/wrench/boxabike.html or here
http://www.adv-cycling.org/features/boxingbike.cfm

I've generally used a tarp although some people advocate clear plastic because they think if people can see it's a bike then there less likely to pitch it around. Carry on your saddle and post.

As Dan mentioned, I usually just to to a shop and get a box for free (most will pack it up for you nicely for $20) and fly whererever I'm going... put the bike together, ditch the box if I have to and hit up another shop in whatever city I'm in for another box before heading back...

Fun ride out West yesterday. Ended up skipping the RBG and doing a tour around the bay instead. Found some neat stuff to do!

Met a guy at the park at the West end of the harbour who let me take a spin on this:

http://www.geocities.com/machinefitter/

It's got a neat 2spd hub that you shift by pedaling backwards just a bit (it's a coaster brake too!)

Couldn't see myself doing a long ride on that thing, but a neat cruiser nonetheless!

i went for a ride to scarborough yesterday. test rode a wayyyyyy reduced 2006 specialized allez comp (full 105, zertz inserts, carbon stays/fork) at d'ornellas - which i am now scrambling to scrape up for - and had lunch at a lebanese bakery at lawrence/warden. the lebanese pizzas there were probably the highlight of the whole ride. i'm craving one now, anyone want to go for a ride out there for dinner?

so weird.. I remembered about 3 minutes ago that I ordered some tires from PBK and thought "I wonder when they'll show up..?"

Then a mail guy walks around the corner of my cube at work and hands me the package.

mmm I just had one of those last night too. Except in Berlin. When I get back and get my arm out of this gosh darned sling I'll totally be up for that. I'm going to want to ride the **** out of my road bike. Anyone who wants to do some nice autumn road rides (Wes) you know who to call in approximately 6 weeks! (I'm referring to myself)

yes yes yes.

Funny actually, I also had some amazing Lebanese food when I was in Berlin. Also one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. Shared a big platter of various cheeses, meats, fruits, veggies, breads, etc with a friend. Started with a glass of prosecco, ended with a shot of espresso. Good times.

jeremywhitehorn 08-20-07 11:00 AM

I love lebanese food. there is a lebanese-jamaican pizza place in the east end somewhere that is supposed to be amazing. i've been meaning to try it out...

EDIT: I would like to go to the film fest; if i can convince my lady to go i'll be a yes for wednesday's screening.

i probably should have mentioned not tonight, anyhow. i have a soccer game tonight, for an adult league i joined. all that running is doing wonders for my sprinting and climbing capabilities on the bike. any takers for some night this week?

FilipeBarbosa 08-20-07 11:32 AM

warning airlines are not resposible for any damage to your bike. pad your bike box well! when i moved to Mexico i brought my bike with me boxed by a bike shop and the chaingard was bent and the front break basicly smashed off by the time it got to me. i did avoid the $100 surcharge at pearson. the guy working the ticket desk was a downhiller and said he doesnt charge people for traveling with bikes out of principle.

the cost of fixing my bike when i got to mexico and found the local bike shop was less then 10$ the labour down there was dirt cheap. odly enough that was when i starte riding brakeless cause my poor spanish at the time i couldnt understand why the guy just took my broken break off and tuned up the bike and told me to take it to the velodrome... i thought he was messing with the white kid and just sucked it up and took it easy on the road. 2 weeks before i was leaving i took the bike there to get boxed and my spanish was way better so i was able to get them to pad the hell out of it and also find out that the little city i was living in LaPaz has a velodrome...

Is there a screening on Wednesday? I thought the filmage started on Friday....

And yes, up for lebanese pizza! There's also an awesome Turkish pizza (pide) place at Gerrard and Pape.

Fed-Ex Guy : Wesley Hodgson?
Neo : Yeah, that's me.
Fed-Ex Guy : Just sign here..
Fed-Ex Guy : Ok, that's great. Have a nice day!
[Cell rings]
Neo : Hello...?
Morpheus : Hello, Neo. Do you know who this is?
Neo : Morpheus?
Morpheus : Yes...I've been looking for you, Neo. I don't know if you're
ready to see what I want to show you, but unfortunately you
and I have run out of time. They're coming for you, Neo, and
I don't know what they're going to do.
Neo : Who's coming for me?
Morpheus : Stand up and see for yourself.

Yeah, I think the films start on Friday. Wednesday = Art Bike Show + music @ The Gladstone. Thursday = Bikes Rock + Music @ Spin Gallery. Both should be good parties, but no films.

Also, there's an after party at the Whippersnapper gallery on Friday after the film program. Goldsprints ahoy!

I have an extra pass to see the new Mr. Bean movie tonight. It's at 7 at SilverCity at Yonge and Eglinton. The pass admits two. If anyone wants it, let me know. Usually you should show up by 6:40 to make sure you get a seat.

fisso416 08-20-07 02:35 PM

Thanks for all bike-box info. I'll pack my bike with care... in hopes that St. ... never mind.

Also - we need a Gladstone attack plan ! Grab a pre drink at Caddilac - or food somewhere? Ideas?

I'm away Fri-Sun so I need to pack the fest in as much as possible.

pinerider 08-20-07 03:59 PM

Anybody from here ride the gold Nishiki brakeless fixed on the Brampton-Waterloo MS Biketour this weekend?? I had a quick glance at the bike when it was parked by the cafeteria door, very nice!
Gotta have great legs to go those hills for 100k for Saturday and then come back for another 100k on Sunday!

MattRennick 08-20-07 04:14 PM

I don't know if he posts here or not but my guess is that was Matt.
He borrowed a 46t chainring from me which didn't end up fitting him very well... which worked out for the best. He said that there were a lot of hills he didn't expect which meant the 44t he had on there originally worked out much, much better.
